Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin White.
Hi Kristin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
There are 100 places to start when trying to describe how we got to where we are now. But I’ll begin by describing my first attempt at meditation — I was asked to sit in the lotus position and free my mind of everything. What an impossible task that was! Years later, at a women’s retreat I experienced a sound bath and discovered a much easier, more gentle approach to meditation.
So I started attending sound baths regularly and after about a year, I took my friend (and neighbor), Farnaz Nour Reneker, to a sound bath and she loved it. Very shortly after that, she signed up for sound meditation classes and bought a couple of bowls and a gong and I got major FOMO and said, “you can’t do this without me” and she said “I’ve been waiting for you to ask.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Up until COVID, it has been pretty smooth. A friend of ours, Raphael McMaster, owns Resin art studio, and he welcomed us into his space during the evenings. We started with one session a week and grew to 3 sessions a week, with monthly workshops and semi-annual retreats. When Covid hit, everything stopped – all sound baths, workshops, everything. And most devastating – the first quarantine orders hit a week before our big Spring Solstice Retreat in Sedona, where people were attending from all over the country. It was the biggest event we had ever planned.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in Sound Meditation. Our core business is group sound bath sessions in our studio, as well as wellness workshops and retreats. We also offer private sound baths, private sound healing sessions, private Reiki sessions, and custom recordings. We are passionate about sound meditation and welcome both beginners and experienced meditators. I want people who have never experienced sound bath meditation to know how easy it is. At the most basic level, you just lay on a yoga mat and listen to the high vibrational music we are creating in the moment. We spend a few minutes before each session walking through how to approach your own meditation during the session. Then we do a few breathing exercises and start the sound bath where we play crystal singing bowls, Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, Native American flute, chimes, drums, and more instruments. By the end of the session, most people experience a deep sense of relaxation and grounding. Also, our business name has a fun story – We threw 100s of names back and forth for days. Then one morning, I was sitting at Farnaz’s kitchen table and I said WHITE LIGHT SOUNDS! It’s a combination of my last name and her maiden name (Nour means light in Farsi) and of course, it invokes the universal healing white light. That was it.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
So many books! The two I refer to the most are The Healing Power of Sound: Recovery from Life-Threatening Illness Using Sound, Voice, and Music by Mitchell L. Gaynor MD and Tuning the Human Biofield: Healing with Vibrational Sound Therapy by Eileen Day McKusick. While I don’t usually need outside help to meditate, I recommend the Insight Timer app for folks who need a little boost to get them started.
