Hidden Gems: Meet Kanita Bourne of Rebourne Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kanita Bourne.

Hi Kanita, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been a mental health therapist for close to two decades. I constantly considered opening a private practice however, I was always doing important trauma work for other agencies. During that start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I got the strong urge to not only help people through this collective trauma but to also help people begin the work to heal from their generational traumas and patterns so they are able to have the lives they could not even dream of.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Therapy in general is always difficult to get some people to buy into. The stigma will have you believe that something is wrong with you if you consider therapy. This has been an obstacle for years. Virtual therapy is also difficult, especially using some of the somatic approaches that I prefer to support my clients. However, I have found that Virtual therapy is also a better fit for individuals with time constraints.

As you know, we’re big fans of Rebourne Wellness. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Rebourne Wellness is obviously a play on my last name however, I thought it was perfect for a Wellness/therapy practice. We all have the opportunity to have a second (or third) chance to live our best lives if we take it. We all can be reborn into the best versions of ourselves.

Rebourne Wellness focuses on digging into the experiences that shaped current behaviors and patterns and initiating the work, holding your hand through understanding and forgiving the experiences that brought you here. We also do this while helping you identify where you want to go and mapping out the road to get there.

My passion is the healing of the black family. When I say this the belief is that we only do couples and family work. This is untrue. We work with individuals as well because the black family can never be whole if those who comprise the family are not whole. This year I will be launching a few coaching programs that focus on the main areas of healing that I have noticed that are required for healing individuals and inturn the family unit.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I am extremely excited to launch more programs that will allow for both individual and collective work. As a people, we have been conditioned to work as individuals however, at our core we do the best when we have a village, a support system. In the next few years, I am seeing that ReBourne Wellness will organically transition towards a village model where we are regularly hosting retreats and creating healing environments that reinforce the current work we are doing and serve as a constant reminder that you are not alone.
