Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Jerry Lee of Kin Health & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jerry Lee.

Hi Dr. Lee, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in East Los Angeles by immigrant parents from Taiwan. Family has always been a foundational source of my success, achievement and motivation, hence the name of our clinic “Kin Health & Wellness.” Coming from an Asian-American background, Traditional Chinese Medicine, philosophy and culture was implemented in our way of life. The food that we ate during the changes of the seasons or because they held different “hot/cold” properties based off of what types of symptoms we experienced were all part of the way we looked at the duality of life with “yin/yang” in regards to the body and balance towards health. Seeing my father go through a stroke while I was in grade-school and being treated with Acupuncture and watching (or more like smelling) the herbs my mother cooked daily when she had fibroids were factors that peaked my interest in a more natural/holistic way of healing the body.

I was always active as a child and played sports, more specifically basketball, and at an early age I knew that I wanted to be in the health/medical profession because I wanted to help people improve their lives, stay active, and live healthier. My first introduction to Chiropractic was in high school when our basketball team’s doctor was a Doctor of Chiropractic. I shadowed his practice and got a deeper understanding of the nervous system and made the connection of the chiropractic nerves overlapping something I had seen before with the acupuncture meridian channels. Both philosophies had a more vitalistic view of healing for the human body and a more holistic view on how to care for the body.

Before attending the University of Michigan majoring in Kinesiology, I interned at a Chiropractic/Acupuncture office, as well as a Physical Therapy center to explore my post-graduate options. Going back to my Asian heritage roots/culture, I decided to study both Traditional Chinese Medicine obtaining a Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, as well as my Doctor of Chiropractic degree. While in Chiropractic/Acupuncture school, I was exposed to various forms of Chiropractic techniques, one in particular fascinated me the most called Applied Kinesiology. This technique looked at the body, not just as a mechanistic/biomechanical machine, but also as a “whole,” including diet/nutrition (the biochemical side of health), along with the mental/emotional stressors that affect a person’s physiology and well-being. From there, I began my journey to healing my own injuries (which included bouts of plantarfasciitis as well as an 8mm disc bulge in my low back) while inquiring more about the multi-faceted dimensions of healing for the mind, body and spirit. To this day, I have completed over 3,000+ hours of post-graduate seminars in the field of Chiropractic, Kinesiology, Acupuncture/Chinese Medicine and Natural Healing techniques, yet I still learn EVERYDAY how amazing the human body can function and recover on deeper healing levels!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been fortunate to have the trust, love, and support by the people around me, starting off with family and friends, and am grateful every day for that. I’ve invested a lot of blood, sweat, tears, time, and money in trying to learn from the best, stay up-to-date with latest techniques, technology, medical research and advancements in natural and holistic medicine, and I believe that that curiosity and interest has helped create the business and where I am today. Offering honest care and truly treating our clients like “family” or “KIN” has truly made an impact on the growth of Kin Health & Wellness. Of course, learning how to sustain and build a business is very different from “doctoring,” but I always had the mentality that authentically caring and showing compassion for all our patients would automatically bring in business and the rest would take care of itself. I don’t discount the long nights and hours in the office, the exchanges in personnel, etc., and all the intricacies of owning a business that comes with the territory, but I believe those experiences are all part of the process of growing and expansion.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Kin Health & Wellness was established in 2012 in hopes of creating a one-stop-shop for holistic health and healing and providing clients with a more natural, hands-on approach to healthcare. Each session provides personalized care and focuses on the patient and what the body presents via Kinesiology/muscle testing, so there is not a ‘one-size-fits-all” approach to your health. We take our time with our clients to get to the root cause of the patient’s disease/distress, and we do our best to coach the individual on how to live a healthier, happier, and fuller life. Using Kinesiology, we can determine what types of structural, chemical, or emotional blocks may be affecting the patient, and we are able to address each causative factor utilizing therapies such as: chiropractic, acupuncture, energetic healing, neuro-emotional feedback mechanisms, cold laser, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, physical therapy/rehab, whole-food-based supplements/herbs, and more, based on the individual’s needs.

There is much-growing research in Psycho-Neuroimmunology and how the mind and body are connected, so the psychosomatic approach and viscerosomatic approach are highly emphasized and addressed in our clinic as we believe it is a huge underlying factor for the cause of disease and distress in a lot of client’s bodies. We have this amazing kinesiology technique called Neuro-Emotional Technique that all of the practitioners in my office are well-equipped and trained in to be able to access what is sub-consciously causing stress for the client. It is so fascinating to see how immediate clients can connect with what comes up during the muscle test and how quickly their bodies can heal and respond after addressing this emotional component to their health and allowing them to go through their process. I’m very humbled and grateful to have such a great team of practitioners and staff who keep the business running and flowing. I’ve learned that it really does take a village and a great team to make things work functionally and cohesively. I’ve learned that to become a great leader, whether its staff or for clients, I have to nurture and nourish those relationships and take care of them as if they were my own. I am so blessed to have a team of practitioners who believe in the same for their clients and have that same “heart” and truly want to make a difference and help those around them. The compassion and support that we collectively have in our office, as well as the passion for the work we do shines through each individual, and with that energy and intention, I am quite confident that we can make a difference in client’s lives.

Our motto for Kin Health & Wellness is MOVE-FEEL-NOURISH-HEAL. I truly believe in these components of health. 1) If you MOVE, exercise, do not stay stagnant, and progress forward, all the nerves, all the blood, all the lymph, all the neurons in your body will remain healthy, vibrant, and alive. 2) If you are FEELing positive, feeling to find and process your emotions, and live life with intention and purpose, you can progress. 3) If you NOURISH your body with healthy, organic, whole foods, and hydrate adequately, and not over-pollute your body with toxins, you can nourish your body biochemically to get better through diet and nutrition. Ultimately, if one is able to put all of these three components together, especially at the same time (MOVE, FEEL, NOURISH), and honor the body’s innate self-regulating process to reach its fullest potential, one will ultimately HEAL!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a VERY shy kid growing up. If you were to read my junior high school yearbook, most kids wrote to me, “why are you so shy?” Or things like “open up!” So I definitely played more of the observing and quieter role than most. At times, I still think that is part of my character. Playing basketball with my friends and my older brother definitely helped open me up to what it takes to be involved with a team environment. Because we played so much basketball, this always kept me into health and fitness and wanting to take care of my body, which peaked my interest in my current career in encouraging others to stay up with their health and wellness.

I enjoyed being outside and playing sports with friends and just spending time with family and friends. Family, basketball, and a huge interest in hip-hop, jazz, R&B/soulful music is what I grew up with, and a big part of that is attributed to my late older brother, Alan, as well. He influenced me into the art of hip-hop music and culture so much that we both spent time messing with turntables and even both joined spoken-word/emceeing crews in college. Nothing big-time, but just something that we could express art and words through with meaning.
