Today we’d like to introduce you to Daphne Subar.
Hi Daphne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After practicing law for over 25 years, I decided it was time to follow my dreams and passion and open a bakery. I wanted to create something unique, something tasty and something sweet. After thinking (and over-thinking) this idea for several years, I decided to combine the taste and crunch of mandelbread and biscotti with the sweetness of a cookie. These new treats were a big hit from the beginning and Subarz was launched. I started with just one flavor and one size package and since 2016, we have expanded and now offer over 20 varieties including gluten-free, nut-free and dairy-free options.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been very lucky and it has generally been a smooth road. I am always open to learning new and better ways to create my product and run my business. But, like any small business there have been struggles and some of mine include scaling, fighting imposter syndrome and trusting myself and others enough to hire help.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Subarzsweets is an online bakery that helps all of its clients with their gift-giving needs. We specialize in a unique baked good, different from all other products on the market. All of our gifts come packaged in our signature pink boxes, with each Subarz placed inside a beautiful doily. The care and thoughtfulness that goes into choosing Subarz as a gift is apparent from the moment the organza ribbon is untied to reveal the delicious treats. We ship nationwide, Subarz requires no refrigeration and we are proud to be the go-to gift for so many of our clients, both personal and corporate. We recently launched a membership program which makes sending and receiving Subarz easier.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I didn’t think I was a risk-taker which is one reason I procrastinated for years and delayed following my passion and launching Subarz. The biggest risk was giving up the practice of law and launching a small business, something I had never done before. I had always encouraged my three daughters to follow their passion and not be afraid of taking risks, and it was my daughters who challenged me to follow my passion and take this risk. While it was scary, I reassured myself that I could always return to the practice of law if this didn’t work out which provided me with some security and a “safety-net” if this didn’t work out.
My view of risk taking has changed significantly. Now that I started a small business, I realize that there is so much out there to try and learn and I am not nearly as hesitant. The pandemic and one of my daughter’s battles with cancer (and her subsequent remission) have taught me that life is too short and unpredictable to avoid risks just because you are afraid.
