Exploring Life & Business with Piper Moretti of The Crypto Realty Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Piper Moretti.

Hi Piper, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was in the entertainment industry for years, mainly on sitcoms which tend to have a schedule akin to the school year – they bein production in August and typically end in March or April. I needed another side gig during hiatuses to supplement my income and a friend suggested I look into real estate. I got licensed in April of 2015, and about a year and a half into it I got a call from a random lead online wanting to view some properties in Manhattan Beach. We hit it off, found a beautiful home for him and his family, and just before we put in the offer he let me know he was going to purchase in Bitcoin. I had heard of Bitcoin but didn’t know much about it. I started to Google real estate transactions done with Bitcoin and only found one other that was completed a year prior in Tahoe. I immediately called the parties involved – the agent, the payment processor, title, anyone I could get ahold of. A BitPay representative got back to and said they could help. The listing agent on the property we were putting the offer in on was convinced up until close that we were trying to pull a fast one, but we managed to put the puzzle pieces together including my buyer purchasing a Lambo during the escrow process to help us prove that high-ticketed items could be purchased with this “internet nerd money” that ultimately led to the success of the purchase. We went on to do three more, then word got around in the crypto & blockchain space that these transactions were happening which led me to my 5th client. I thought I was late to the game, but it turned out that I was one of the only agents who were able to figure this out in 2017, and the news spread like wildfire.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh god, no. The hype around Bitcoin faded after the price peaked at the end of 2017 when it hit $20,000, it quickly dropped down to $3,000 and pretty much stayed there for a while during the Crypto Winter of 2018 & 2019. In the meantime, I had already made a name for myself in the space, and I think that led to a hack at the end of 2018. I lost everything. F*cking everything. I was also leaving a horrible relationship and my headspace was so clouded I just couldn’t do much of anything. I was starting to see light at the end of the tunnel when the pandemic hit. At that point, I just had to laugh, sit back and bake blueberry muffins during lockdown. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise because I was able to sit with everything for a while and reset. Towards the end of 2020 another real estate colleague who was in the blockchain and crypto space called me and said “Hey, crypto is going to blow up and you need to come out of the woodwork and start thinking bigger.” I had all but left it behind and just wanted to focus on “traditional” real estate, but she was relentless (thank goodness she was). I switched brokerages where she was, and it’s just taken off again. I’ve never been so busy and I have her to thank for that.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’ve learned that any agent has to have tenacity to stay in the business. I think years in the entertainment industry prepped me for the rollercoaster ride. I’m also the type of person who has to think of every angle to get the job done before throwing in the towel, which hasn’t happened yet. I’m a problem solver who just doesn’t accept no for an answer for sure.
