Exploring Life & Business with Dr. Michael Jacobson of Robertson Dental Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Michael Jacobson.

Hi Dr. Jacobson, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in raised in LA. I was lucky enough to have all of my training and education in Southern California which I’m grateful for since this is the community I treat today. I’m a second-generation dentist and got into dentistry right around the time my father was retiring as an orthodontist. I remember growing up and helping him out at the office sometimes, the part that stuck with me was that he always treated his patients as family members. This is why all of his patients loved him. It was very important for me to continue this feeling for my patients. One of the benefits of having a boutique is the fact that I get to know my patients very personally since I am not rushed and we are always seeing one patient at a time. So many patients come from other offices and appreciate this because they feel like elsewhere they are just treated like another number. Early in my training, I realized esthetics was my talent and started doing more and more procedures and learned more and more to be able to give the best results for my patients which is where I am today.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Unfortunately in dental school, they teach you very little about the business side of dentistry and how to manage a practice. That is why it was important for me to have mentors early on who I can ask questions to and learn from. After the period of remodeling my father’s practice, we were ready to get going, but it wasn’t as easy as it seemed. Building your brand and name in such a saturated field and community was hard. There were probably weeks that we weren’t even seeing one patient. It was then that I realized that the most important thing in building loyal clients was to treat them honestly, fairly and with extremely great results. The best marketing is internal marketing. Slowly by slowly, our happy patients started spreading the word of the feeling we were trying to give to our patients which was that in our office you can always be treated like a family member.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My practice has a signature “boutique” style where patients come for their dental needs. We are proud of our one patient at a time model. We specialize in esthetic dentistry and porcelain veneers. Our work ranges from single tooth esthetic dentistry to full mouth implant rehabilitation. I feel like since the boom in cosmetic dentistry over the past few years, I’ve had many patients say the same thing at our veneer consults, “Please make sure they don’t look bulky or opaque chiclet teeth”. To me, that shows that patients are very educated on cosmetic dentistry. Not only do they know what they want but they know what they don’t want as well. We are best known for our life-like veneers that actually look like real teeth. We always tell our patients, the best veneer is when nobody knows it’s a veneer.

What matters most to you? Why?
Peace of mind. I think when you treat people right, when you’re honest and try your best to do good work you will always sleep well at night. I think many people think once we take the white coat off our job stops. I feel like with social media in the modern-day, we are always connected with our patients and peers. For me, doing my job is literally a 24/7 task. If I’m not doing dentistry I’m enjoying every precious moment with my family.
