Today we’d like to introduce you to Denitza Leon.
Hi Denitza, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In December 2018, I was working for a startup beauty brand. At this point in my career, I was a Marketing Director working my dream job, or so I thought. I was called into a meeting that would change my life. I was let go 3 days before the Christmas Holiday; you can imagine how that felt. I thought I was at the peak of my career to then being unemployed and with no one really hiring during that time of year. I had my pity party for 1 day and decided either I was going to try to apply for other Beauty Brands or pursue my dream of starting my own Creative Marketing Agency. In January 2019, I pitched my first client ever, Beauty Creations. To this day they are our longest-standing client and I will forever be grateful for their business.
The point where my business is now has been a journey I hold dear to my heart. Life has happened in the in-between. I had to pick myself up and remind myself that the knowledge I had was of value. The building of Ouu i love started in my childhood pink bedroom, to then having a little studio in downtown Santa Ana, shared with 3 other tenants, then relocating to Whittier, creating a small studio space in my home, to now having a physical studio/office space in the heart of Uptown Whittier.
My parents, family, and partner have been my biggest cheerleaders supporting my dream and cheering for me always. Forever Grateful!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is a song by Frank Ocean called biking where he says, “God gave you what you could handle” and this is my reminder that although the road has been a challenge, I have been able to pull through each situation given. In 2019 my partner was diagnosed with a rare leukemia called BPDCN and told he had 8 months to live. Can you imagine that and trying to run a business? Let’s say we made it together. I was flying back from LA to Houston because he was getting treatments and MD Anderson. In between appointments for him, I would take business calls in the hallways or wrap up edits for clients. My perspective on life and my business has changed. I know now the richest thing in life is good health. Presently now with Ouu i love, this road has not been easy in the last five years. Sleepless nights, uncertainty, and a whole load of coffee haha. Ouu i love is one I wouldn’t trade for anything else. I am truly thankful always.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
I’m a firm believer we should always keep learning and investing in ourselves. Skillshare has been a fantastic platform to learn from other creatives. I love turning to Pinterest for inspiration. TikTok for quick snippets of knowledge on trends, how-to’s, and BTS. Another platform that helped me in the middle of my career was General Assembly. An investment I don’t regret to this day!
