Exploring Life & Business with Alberto Anaya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alberto Anaya.

Alberto, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For whatever reason, it took me longer to be able to speak than the other kids. However, my favorite toy back then was a tiny Casio keyboard on which (my mum says) I would play by ear all the melodies that I would hear on the TV and on the radio.

My parents realized that and took me to the conservatory when I was 7, and here I am 20 years later! (I did my bachelor’s degree at Seville’s Highest Conservatory of Music, then I went to NYU as a Fulbright Scholar for their film scoring master’s program, and then I moved to LA for work).

Now I can proudly say that I am a multi award-winning composer and post-production audio engineer in this city working in all sorts of projects full-time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. To begin with, I was born in a working-class family. Meaning that coming here to study (initially) and then for work would have been impossible without the Fulbright Scholarship and without working my ass off to excel in academics while taking every single gig and every single teaching job.

This one is a road that involves all sorts of sacrifices even for well of people. However, my biggest struggle was by far having surgery for a brain tumor in 2010 with the aftermath, the consequences, and the big impact that such a thing had in my life from a very early age.

Truly, it was only by having the best family in the world, the best friends in the world, and the best teachers in the world that I got a chance.

My name is Alberto Anaya. I am an LA-based composer and a post-production audio engineer graduated from NYU ́s Screen Scoring masters program as a Fulbright scholar in New York. My extensive training and qualifications have led me to accrue a lot of experience as well as to meet a lot of people that can make things happen. That’s what set me apart from others. Luckily I’ve never had to “fake it until I make it”.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
It would be the combination of my extensive academic training and my experience in such a wide array and variety of projects. Each project is unique, and although most of them will have the very same problems (this they teach you in school), the solutions are (and have to be) unique to each project (and this they don’t teach in school). So the right combination of both training and experience gives you a deep understanding of many many things that will help you solve the many issues that will come with every project.
