Exploring Life & Business with Lee Carter of Carter Permit Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Carter.

Hi Lee, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles and have lived in both the city and valley. I have an infinite love for the eclectic culture that makes up the City of Angels. Our city’s history and architecture have always intrigued me. I really wanted to contribute to Los Angeles in some small way. Growing up, I did not know how I would accomplish that. After years of exploring various careers, including; hospitality, special education, and solar installation, I needed a change.

A family friend hired me to learn about permit expediting. I spent a couple of years working for their company, learning how the development and building permit processes work. My specialty has become obtaining building permits for commercial signage. After a few grateful years of learning from my mentor, with their blessing, I went solo.

I opened Carter Permit Consulting in August 2020. Over the past eight months, CPC has seen steady growth. We are privileged to be representing some of the most reputable sign contractors in Southern California. I greatly appreciate playing a small role in the constant development of Los Angeles.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been relatively smooth but filled with many unexpected curves. As a new business owner, the biggest challenge was not knowing what I did not know. As a sole proprietor, I had to learn many new processes on how to legally, efficiently, and successfully run a business. During COVID, all of those steps seemed to take longer than I anticipated.

I know my biggest struggle is a temporary one, the pandemic. COVID has delayed the permitting process. Municipalities are working very hard adjusting and converting in-person services to digital portals. Currently, working with various municipalities digitally is very time-consuming and challenging. We are all doing the best we can under the circumstances.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Carter Permit Consulting?

We offer our clients research and consulting services. This includes but is not limited to researching; city building codes, zoning codes and considerations, and city planning. The most common feedback I receive regarding other permit service providers, inconsistent communication. I am most proud of the customer service we provide.
