Daily Inspiration: Meet Vicky Pasion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicky Pasion.

Vicky, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been singing since I was a young’un… I grew up on soul stars like Whitney Houston, Celine Dionne, and Diana Ross and in a way, learnt how to express myself through love songs. My mum noticed my gift and took me around the UK for auditions and opportunities to perform, and by 8 years old, I had a scholarship to a theatre school in London! From here, I had opportunities to be on West End stages in shows like Disney’s ‘The Lion King’, and fell in love with performing, channeling different characters, and the electric connection with an audience.

I felt pressure to go to university, yet am so proud to be the first in my family to get first honors and a postgraduate degree. I became a teacher and, within two years, felt like an imposter – how could I encourage others to follow their dreams when I wasn’t following mine? So, I trained hard and within 6 months, was back on the West End and a UK tour, performing Michael Jackson hits, writing my own songs, and making choices that made me happy.

It’s been an incredible journey of self-healing and love. I went from singing to thousands to pubs and clubs, trusting that my journey would keep resonating and my artistry would evolve and connect with more and more people. Three projects into my music career, I’m supported by the MOBOs, the 02 Academy, and Estée Lauder – this year has been wild! At the moment, I’m working on my next project in LA, and can’t wait to release new music next year.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve definitely experienced some bumps on the road! Obstacles make us stronger and give us opportunities to grow. As a young woman in the music industry, I’ve found it challenging to be taken seriously. So, with support, I co-founded a production company that gives me creative ownership over my art, as well as opening up opportunities for other women and people of colour to collaborate and have access to mentorship. This year, I’ve been recognized as a trailblazing woman as part of the Estee Lauder Emerging Leaders Fund and the Vital Voices inaugural partnership, and it’s been incredible to be a part of a global community of like-hearted, ambitious women who are making an impact on the world through their gifts. This honor has opened me up to more opportunities to better serve more people through my music and the stories that are told.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love performing the most. My background in theatre, from taking center stage to knowing what it feels like to be in the cheapest auditorium seats, helps me to connect. I love how music makes me feel – putting it together with the visual language of the live stage makes the whole experience magical. I bring this energy to every performance and feel that this sets me apart from other singer, songwriters. I’m most proud of my dedication to helping to make safer spaces in the music industry – from my female-led teams to safer studio sessions and finding strength in vulnerability; I’m proud to be speaking up for matters that mean the most to me. I’m not perfect, but I’m open, curious, and grateful to keep learning how using my voice can also help others to use theirs too.

Any big plans?
I’m so excited to be working on my next project! Since the release of ‘SOUL STAR,’ I’ve been travelling around the world, working with producers, leaning deeper into love, its lessons, and my divine feminine. I’m excited for more live shows next year as I keep coming into my womanhood. Everything feels possible. I’m excited to keep holding space for deeper connection and fun. It’s been a heavy couple of years – I feel like we all need permission to be less hard on ourselves so that we can feel renewed as we come together to tackle matters in the world that matter most to us.
