Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Chi.
Hi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thank you so much for the opportunity! I’m Tiffany, and I specialize in dreamy, airy, minimalist, light filled Maternity, Birth, Newborn, Baby, and Family photography. I studied both oil painting and photography at the school of Fine Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles. My studies heavily influence my “painterly” and “airy” photographic style. Before my pursuits into Photography, I was actually training to become a pastry chef. I studied at a culinary school in Paris, and then worked at a local pâtisserie, where I met my husband, Alex, and we moved to southern California, where we now raise our two kiddos, Aimee and Ellias, and our husky pup, Frodo Barkins.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth journey to get to where I am today, but I’ve always believed that anything that is ever worth having or pursuing comes with an element of challenge, risk, vulnerability, and failure. We are all works in progress, and constantly falling down and learning to rise again. It’s important to aim for progress, and not perfection. This is extremely difficult for me to admit and to practice because I’m a recovering perfectionist. Being “perfect” has always been a way for me to cope with and control what was broken and messy in my life. However, I have found that what it really does is that it leaves me constantly feeling not good enough.
I became a mother unexpectedly, and it completely turned my world upside down. I was unemployed at the time, scared, and alone. I have always struggled with my mental health, and suffered from Postpartum Depression after my daughter was born. I felt utterly lost with no support, as a new mom.
I decided to start my Photography Business in 2020, and juggled two jobs until 2022 when I decided to operate full time in Photography. My heart has always been to be able to photograph mothers and the beauty of their love for their children. To offer a way for mothers to feel seen in not only their struggles, but also in their strengths. This journey has been terrifying, but so rewarding to see something I’ve built on my own. I’m so grateful to those who have believed in me and supported my work from the beginning.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Of course. If there’s one thing I’ve realized since becoming a mother myself, it’s that life will not always go as planned. In fact, it’s often the opposite: an oscillating roller coaster. It’s chaotic, terrifying, glorious, full of joy, heartache, celebration, and everything in-between. The best we can do is to remain present for it, and to offer the anxious, worried, grieving parts of ourselves a few breaths of kindness and grace as we heal and move forward. It may not always go as planned, but remember that it is never too late to capture the beautiful life you’ve created.
I believe that what sets me apart as a photographer is my attention to detail and the fact that I care deeply about every single person in front of my lens. A previous client once shared,
“If you’re looking to only hire someone to “take a couple photos,” look elsewhere. That isn’t what Tiffany does. She does so much more. Hire her because you want to feel seen, or because you want to create living art with your loved ones, but most of all, hire her because you want feel taken care of.”
This is truly the core of why I do what I do.
Lastly, I’m so excited to share that in 2022, I opened up my natural light Studio space located in Orange County, California. I am so excited to add this offering for my Clients who want a timeless and beautiful option for their Pregnancy and Maternity, Newborn, and Baby Sessions. I am also still offering on location and in home Sessions as well.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I firmly believe that the thief of happiness is comparison. It’s so important to maintain a sense of gratitude for what we already have, otherwise we’ll get lost in the game of comparing with others and feeling constantly dissatisfied. Happiness for me is really the little things: dance parties in the kitchen, kissing my babies’ cheeks, sleeping in, and running start hugs.
