Daily Inspiration: Meet Saul and Jaré Cervantes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Saul and Jaré Cervantes.

We’re Saul and Jaré Cervantes, husband and wife, and owners of Heroic Strength. We’ve been married for 5 years now and moved to Los Angeles in 2018. Saul is a Personal Trainer, and Jaré is a Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach. We are both very passionate about health and fitness – it’s something we bonded over early in our relationship. We’ve both been active people in various ways throughout our lives, and in our 20’s, our focus turned to the gym and weightlifting. We have been partners in life and in the gym for the past ten years! Saul’s passion for fitness really started when he was recovering from a significant knee injury he sustained while skateboarding. He rehabbed himself by working out and focused on gaining muscle. Through this experience, he got a feel for how powerful fitness is, which led him to creating a career out of it. He got certified as a Personal Trainer in 2014 and has been working with clients ever since.

Over the years, he’s also put himself through many physical practices, including bodybuilding, gymnastics, calisthenics and strength training. Jaré was also a personal trainer for a time, then became more passionate about the nutrition side of things. After working through struggles with body image, yo-yo dieting and a complicated relationship with food, she was driven to help others so they wouldn’t have to go through the same struggles. She completed a certification in Nutrition, and in 2018, also became certified as a Vegan Lifestyle Coach & Educator. She officially started her coaching practice upon arriving in Los Angeles, and has been working with clients since. Another piece of the story… In 2015, we started a YouTube channel called Spideyfit. We had been cosplaying Spider-Man characters and thought it would be fun to make videos combining fitness with cosplay. The channel ended up growing pretty quickly, and people were telling us how they started working out and cosplaying because of our videos. We saw firsthand how inspiring superheroes can be for people to make a positive change in their lives. It was then we decided to include superheroes as part of our brand and business, which has become Heroic Strength.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In 2018, we left our hometown (Sunnyvale, CA) and moved to Los Angeles. It was hard to leave our families, friends and a place we had known all our lives for a new city. Jaré left a secure 9-5 office job with benefits and didn’t have a job lined up in L.A. Saul also had to build up his clientele from zero. So we essentially started from scratch here. After settling in, we began focusing on our goal of starting our coaching business. We both began working with clients in our respective fields, and things were going well. We had already built an online presence with Instagram and YouTube, but we didn’t have an official business yet. We were about to launch our website in early 2020 and then the pandemic hit. Gyms closed, everything shut down and suddenly, we had all this time at home together. So this gave us the space to get things going. We successfully launched our first product that Spring – a Spider-Man themed Home Workout program. Starting a business during an unprecedented time in history was tough. We had to stay strong personally and worked really hard through lockdown. But the time also allowed us to get creative and focused, and we are thankful for that.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Over the last decade, we put ourselves through many types of training and diets. We learned something from every single one and have used that experience to figure out what works for us and our clients. Our approach is very balanced – nothing extreme just for the sake of results. We always want our clients to be able to sustain the healthy habits they build while working with us. The health and fitness industry is so saturated with unrealistic expectations, fad diets and extreme workouts these days, and it just leaves people confused and tired. What sets us apart is that we show people how to have fun with their training, how to enjoy healthy eating and make this all fit within their lifestyle. We take a plant-based approach to our own nutrition (we went vegan five years ago) because we feel our best eating this way. For our clients, we meet them where they’re at and help them develop better eating habits, plant-based or not. We’ve had great success with this so far, and many of our clients end up eating more plant-based because they feel great, look amazing and enjoy the food. Heroic Strength was inspired by the superheroes we look up to. Their strength, character, resilience and leadership are qualities us humans can aspire to embody in our own way. We strive to be the best version of ourselves, and we enjoy motivating others to do the same.

What does success mean to you?
Success can be many things… It’s doing work that we are passionate about. It’s being in good health and keeping a roof over our heads. It’s helping people become the best versions of themselves. We love seeing our clients succeed, and they end up motivating us to keep going. We are determined to make a positive impact, and we will always be working towards that.
