Daily Inspiration: Meet Rochelle Mayberry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rochelle Mayberry.

Hi Rochelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It’s funny people ask me all the time how I started and I can never give a clear answer. I feel up in a household with a young mother so all of her friend’s kids were always younger than me and I would just play in their hair and create hairstyles. I loved doing it and seeing everyone’s reaction. I was 13 years old and my oldest uncle asked me to braid his hair straight back and I didn’t do it tight enough he told me to not do hair when I got older. That statement coming from him hurt so bad that I put hair off and only did it every once in a while until I realized that I always came back to hair. I decided to go to beauty school and 2012 but I ended up dropping out due to family reasons. But I returned in 2017 graduated in 2018. I had my own salon by 2019. I’m so happy that I realized what my gift was and decided to become a cosmetologist.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road from dropping out of beauty school in 2012 due to personal reasons, having to work a regular job and doing hair in between. The hardest part about doing hair is the inconsistency in the beginning building clientele and lowballing yourself. But I found my voice and I realized that I’ll be okay moving up without a certain kind of clientele. Also working for people who never want you to succeed and want you to be in their shadow.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in Natural Hair overall, I have my own hair care line that promotes healthy hair. I am known for my Silk Presses and Traditional Installs. I am most proud of becoming a business owner and being someone who people can trust with their hair overall and also know that I will nourish their abs bring it back to health. I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m honest at the end of the day and that I will not provide a service for you if I think it will cause more damage. I am not here just for the money I truly care about my client’s hair and their confidence.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
It’s truly hard to find a mentor nowadays because everyone feels like you are trying to take something from them. All I can say is be mindful of how you approach possible mentors and how you come about finding one. Just go in with an open mind and heart and all should work out for you.
