Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Elisa Moreno.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started when I graduated from high school, I saw everyone heading to college and knew that was exactly what my parents wanted for me. And even though college wasn’t my number one plan, I still decided to go. I loved being in college, I just knew it wasn’t meant for me and I wanted to give my dream a chance.
I truly didn’t want to go on in life regretting that I didn’t do what I actually wanted to do.
So I decided to give myself one semester. One semester to go after the life I wanted. I had no idea what I was going to do. I was in my darkest time and I didn’t know who I was or where I was going. I was completely lost and confused.
Then In the blink of an eye, my whole life flipped upside down when my stepdad passed away. I had never experienced the death of someone so close to me. I truly didn’t know what to do next or how to control my emotions. But Despite my pain and grief, all I knew was that I had to pull myself together for my mother.
Months after my stepdad’s death, I decided to go after my dream of starting my business MORE SPORT STUDIO. More sport studio is a brand where I bring awareness to mental health through fashion. I believe people don’t take mental health seriously enough. It’s something that is often dismissed and overlooked. With my brand, I hope to bring luxury sustainable products with meaning.
I was then scouted by my now manager Elizabeth. My biggest dream since I was ten years old was to be a model. I lost myself so badly that I let go of that dream and tried to focus on something that was “more practical”. But Elizabeth saw the potential in me that I didn’t see in myself for a while. The main reason I gave up on my dream was because I had this belief that I had to look perfect to even get into the business. I thought I needed a specific look or a specific body type. Little did I know I was wrong. I tried for nine years to get scouted and signed but I still truly believe I was found at the perfect time.
My childhood dream finally became a reality this year when I was officially signed to one of the biggest agencies in NYC, Wilhelmina.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road for me at all. My biggest battle is the battle I fight in my head every day. I found myself wanting to give up more times than wanting to continue. But I still pushed myself and managed to continue. I knew there was going to be a light at the end of the tunnel. I knew good was going to come eventually.
What makes you happy?
I don’t believe that there is one specific thing that makes me happy. Despite dealing with my mental health, I’m really a happy and bubbly person.
Because of my rough past and experiences, I find my happiness in the little things.
From Dancing around in my living room with friends to late-night car karaoke to morning cuddles with my mom, and even my crazy family reunions, but what I’m trying to get at is that my happiest moments are when I am surrounded by the people that I love the most.
