Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Murphy.
Hi Kristy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The year was 2007, I had already won a World Championship in longboarding and had been on the contest grind for quite some time. My partner and I were a couple of professional surfers that were ready to retire but still wanted to travel and surf our favorite waves… Saladita, MX and Pavones, CR. We had a bunch of amazing surfboards and a whole lot of experience in surf travel so it was kind of a no-brainer.
After taking inventory of what we had to offer we decided to start setting up elite surf packages for small groups. Our max is 4 guests for a weeklong surf trip. Surfing is such a special experience. We wanted to share that with people and pass on everything that we had learned throughout the years. It’s a lineage that we wanted to respect and invite others to enjoy with us but we wanted to do it the right way. The way we were taught.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Creating a small business out of nothing, with no investors or financial backing is hard to do and takes heaps of dedication and time. We opened up the year before the Financial Crash of 2008, so that made things even more delicate. We made sacrifices and worked hard. We had a great product and we believed in that.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
If fun is a specialty that is what I am famous for and what I do best. My partner is the educator. Our combo guarantees a good time and whole lotta learning. The 4-guest maximum guarantees that our guests receive heaps of personal attention in and out of the water at all times by my partner and me.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
It would have been nice to know a little more about how to set up a business correctly. We flew by the seat of our pants in the beginning and have learned heaps about the business side of owning a business.
We are surfers first, and business people last and that has made our product amazing. Other surf adventure companies are business people first and surfers last. That to me seems so backward.
