Today we’d like to introduce you to John Reed.
Reed Family Baking was inspired by the collection of family-based dessert recipes with a new school flair. The founder is John Reed (JR) who was taught by his father as a child and he has been baking since he was 7/8 years old for family functions or catered events with his dad. Now at 28 years old, John has since moved to Los Angeles in 2017 and Reed Family Baking has been focused on providing classics in new forms or the highest quality desserts our customers have ever tasted.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This hasn’t been a smooth road but hard work, patience and consistency has proven to be beneficial. My biggest challenge thus far was perfecting 13 cookie flavors which all provide specific tastes. Strawberry Shortcake Cookies were the hardest cookie to master that made it to the menu. Through four test trials while consulting with friends and family, we were able to perfect this flavor and match the same classic taste of the ice cream bar in a cookie. Enticing your eyes with the pink color, creaminess of white chocolate, crunch of vanilla Oreos, all topped with the taste of strawberries. As the business continues to grow new flavors are constantly being experimented in order to provide even more classics in different forms.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
An entrepreneur has always been my dream job after finishing college with my business degree. I traveled around the country visiting and seeing over 45 states working in IT, then went on to work for Eli Lilly prior to moving to LA. None of these jobs any of the positions in LA the last four years have truly given me the satisfaction of running my business. Appreciate what I learned but finding my passion and implementing things to meet my personal goals allowed me to take the leap of faith committing to Reed Family Baking.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Bakeries have been fluctuating based on health trends but majority of people enjoy sweet treats. The biggest trends overall have been in infused treats, vegan and gluten-free desserts. At the moment, we are a homestyle-based bakery that provides a southern-style baking techniques with classic flavors and a new school approach.
