Daily Inspiration: Meet HyunJung Yi

Today we’d like to introduce you to HyunJung Yi.

Hi HyunJung, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m an illustrator and graphic designer from South Korea, currently living and working in California. I decided to pursue illustration as my career while studying graphic design in college back in Korea. When I was close to graduating, I wanted to explore graphics furthermore within the illustration. So I came to LA, the city full of inspiration!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s no such thing as free lunch, haha. Even though I had studied graphic design before, understanding the basics of painting and design was challenging. But I didn’t quit and kept practicing my skills because I love what I’m doing, and here’s how I become! I have a new struggle, but it’s a good change. I feel like I’m moving forward to the next step as an artist; I’m trying to settle my artistic voice. I love doing both watercolors and digital painting, and I’m working on mixing and balancing the two.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Most of my works are digital, but ironically, I’m known for my watercolors. I make illustration that focuses on the storytelling of moments and thoughts that are perishable or easily gone, like a shooting star. I feel proud when my paintings evoke emotions in people 🙂

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Steadiness is my key. No matter what circumstance you are in, keep doing it!
