Today we’d like to introduce you to GunSkull Ricky. Them and their team share their story with us below:
The Outlaw Mariachi (formerly known as Charros of Rock in 2020) is LA’s Premier Rock Mariachi Experience! -Formed by vocalist GunSkull Ricky and trumpet extraordinaire Mavero Durán.
Both original members of the band Metalachi and decide to leave after ten years.
They found and recruited talented musicians from various genres… from Mariachi, Flamenco, Latin Jazz and Rock n Roll.
Under the musical direction of Mavero Duran, the band takes all types of songs… rock, Latin rock, metal, country, pop… and turns them into mariachi masterpieces. They’ve even turned the theme from “The Mandalorian” into a cumbia!
Based in the outskirts of LA, band members are from all over Southern California, from Fresno to San Diego.
Formed right as the Pandemic took over the world, the band survived and thrived during this past difficult year, also changing their name along the line.
The band decided to keep fans engaged throughout the pandemic by hosting virtual concerts, livestreams and humorous podcasts.
With a dark western look coupled with mariachi botonadura and moños the band not only satisfies the ears that hear it but also the eyes that see it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like anything else that requires hard work, we have had our share of obstacles along the way. From legal conflicts to a necessary name change… and of course the pandemic, which affected live music everywhere. We believe that things happen for a reason and try to find the positive side of things. We try to see tough situations as blessings in disguise, as challenges that test our willingness to move forward no matter what the roadblock is.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Outlaw Mariachi is a hybrid band that specializes in mixing different genres of music… from Rock, Funk, Reggae, Country and metal…. and adding the sizzle that characterizes Latin music… Mariachi, Rancheras, Flamenco, Cha-Cha, Cumbia, Afro-Cuban beats and more! Just imagine hearing Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the wall” with a rhythmic Cumbia style that will make you just want to get out of your seat and dance. Imagine Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire” with a hint of Cha-Cha while still keeping its hard rock feel. These are just a couple of examples of what The Outlaw Mariachi is capable of doing and bringing to the table. We are very proud of the group of people this ensemble is made up of; professional, music loving individuals that just come together with one goal: to unite the people who hear them play with not only good music but humor and positive vibes. There’s nothing else out there like The Outlaw Mariachi; no one else out there is pulling so many different genres of music into one amazing show like we are.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As long as we don’t get another pandemic, we feel like the industry and what we are bringing to the table musically speaking will continue to grow and expand throughout the country. We already have a short but not small tour happening in August with the one and only Mac Sabbath and are looking forward to it. We try to live in the moment and take things day by day, not worrying about what the future will bring. We know that as long as we do the right thing in the present moment then the future will be the best that we can make of it.
