Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerardo Munoz.
Hi Gerardo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I downloaded photoshop about 6 years ago and started editing there and that’s where my love for editing began. I eventually started editing pictures for my friends and other photographers and eventually, I decided to buy my first camera which was a point-and-shoot camera, and take my own pictures. I fell in love with this art instantly and I’d always practice so that I can get better. Shooting landscape shots was what interested me the most when I first started on this journey and after a couple of months, I decided to take it up a notch by shooting portraits, headshots, and even wedding shoots. I’d like to describe myself as a very well-rounded photographer and what I mean by that is that I can do a variety of different shoots and I like to excel in every single area of photography. During my time as a marketing assistant for a company called Aderans Hair Goods, I had the privilege to be able to work with many creatives including photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and professional models. It was during this time that my experience as a photographer skyrocketed and when I decided to make this my career. After about 6 years of editing and 5 years of photography, I feel like I’m just getting started and I’m very excited about what the future has to offer.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most arts, being a photographer hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been many different types of struggles that I’ve had to overcome over the past couple of years and some that I’m still trying to overcome on a daily basis. One of them is self-confidence. There have been times when I feel like my work isn’t great and I’d start to doubt myself and that has led to wanting to quit at times. Lack of self-confidence has also led to another struggle which is comparing my work to other more experienced photographers. I think comparing yourself to another photographer is perhaps the biggest mistake anyone in the field can do and it has stopped me at times from reaching my full potential in this art. These are just internal struggles, there are other struggles that come with the business like gaining clients or getting your work out there. It is definitely not an easy career but it is definitely rewarding.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known for being a very well-rounded photographer. What I mean by that is that I feel comfortable and have experience doing a lot of different types of shoots. Some of these shoots include headshots, portraits, maternity, engagement, wedding, landscape (drone and non-drone), and family portraits. I’ve always been the type of photographer that likes to step out of my comfort zone and what better way than to specialize in multiple different areas of photography. This really sets me apart from other photographers because I can offer different types of photography services on top of editing skills. I’d say I’m most proud of how much I’ve grown as a photographer and how much I’m starting to grow as a videographer/cinematographer. I’ve been able to gain a ton of experience and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some really talented creatives within this industry.
