Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jennifer Charles.
Hi Dr. Charles, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I came from a family of immigrant entrepreneurs so I knew I would have my own business one day. I always knew I wanted to help people. When I learned about Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in undergrad I felt it is a field that can change the world! I ended up getting my Masters in ABA and then going on for a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership. Besides the skills to help people, I needed to know how to manage a staff. Right now we are working with Autistic children. It’s a great area because the rates of Autism are growing and children will even eventually be the future. We also train other staff on how to work with vulnerable populations, so it’s extremely rewarding.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all! Small businesses are getting squeezed at all angles. It’s hard to try to compete with big businesses. Even in a field such as therapy for autistic kids, if big business smells money, they will try to enter a space they have no business in. for instance, we saw nothing wrong when we started seeing optometrist offices in Walmart. Big businesses such as Amazon, Walmart, and CVS, among others, have their eyes on healthcare now which can be a little scary. There is a saying that goes, you’re either growing or dying, so we are always trying to grow but at an ethical rate to not affect the quality of services and also keep both our staff and customers happy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My goal is that whenever someone comes to work for my company, they leave better than they came in. I’m proud that we’ve been able to give many people satisfactory and fulfilling careers who were not quite sure what they wanted to do. I’m also proud to introduce others to the field of ABA because it’s a skill set that is applicable in all areas of life. I took a poll the other day and found out my staff are interested in applying the principles of ABA to different areas such as government, sports, relationships, and the educational system. Given the skills they learn at Building Block Resolutions, they surely can. and I believe staying in this field is important. There are some who do it all wrong and give it a bad rap, so we try to be one of the good guys. I’m proud of the ethical standards that we hold all of our staff to. We all rest better at night knowing we are helping others and doing the right thing on a daily basis.
What makes you happy?
Knowing that my career actually makes a difference in the lives of others. This makes me happy because someone gave me a chance when I was younger and I believe it’s my duty to do the same.
