Daily Inspiration: Meet Deborah Liss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Liss.

Deborah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As I always say, my artistic journey began the moment I was born. I have always carried a deep passion and determination to pursue my dreams. Born in Lages, a town in southern Brazil, and raised in Blumenau, storytelling has always walked by my side. I have always loved the English language and dreamt of a career in Hollywood as an actress and writer. Even at the tender age of four, while playing with toys, my mother noticed me speaking in a language that didn’t exist. When she asked, I confidently replied that I was being interviewed in English about my movie. Throughout my life, my parents Luis, Isabel and my sister Ana have been big supporters of my aspirations. My mother, in particular, always encouraged my imagination and has been my number one fan. At the age of 12, I wrote and produced my first play at school, a period piece. With donated fabric, my grandmother and I sewed all the costumes. I loved being part of the entire process, and more plays and scripts followed.

While pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Arts, I dedicated myself to studying English and saving funds to pursue acting studies in Los Angeles. During this time, in 2014, I crossed paths with my now-husband, whose artistic soul instantly resonated with mine. In 2015, I moved to the USA, and within the first year, I wrote a feature film called “Diary of Madness,” which will be published as a book next year. Everything seemed to align with my lifelong dreams.

However, life dealt its most heart-wrenching blow when my mother passed away in 2016. I carried the immense weight of guilt and sadness for not being there for her, losing sight of my purpose and feeling trapped in a hopeless state. Yet, as the years passed, I came to believe that my mother’s energy guided me, placing the right people in my path, including my husband, Ed. They reminded me of my purpose as an artist and helped me break free from the self-imposed chains. I found comfort in writing scripts once again. I wrote a short film called “My Violet Energy” in memory of my mom Isabel, set to be produced next year. As I continued to create stories, “Catharsis” came along, a feature film in which I also play the lead role, currently in post-production.

Without a doubt, art and the supportive people surrounding me saved me from the depths of my sorrow. I will forever be grateful for the transformative power of art. It truly has the ability to save lives, and I think that’s why I have this deep passion for storytelling.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe that everyone encounters bumps along the road of life. For myself, the loss of my mother was a significant struggle that brought deep grief and guilt. Additionally, I have faced financial obstacles as an indie filmmaker and actor, also had to navigate the challenges of having an accent within the industry. But, I’m happy to see that the industry is starting to change its perspective on actors with accents. However, these experiences have taught me resilience and strengthened my passion for storytelling.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an actress and writer specializing in both film and theater, I love to create compelling and diverse stories that resonate with audiences. I’m known for my ability to create complex characters and bring depth to their emotions. One of my proudest accomplishments is writing and starring in the feature film “Catharsis,” which explores themes of healing and self-discovery. What sets me apart from others is my unique perspective as a Brazilian-born artist with a passion for storytelling and a dedication to pushing boundaries in my craft.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for those who are just starting out is to embrace the journey and be patient with yourself. It’s essential to be persistent and resilient as success in this industry often comes with its fair share of challenges. Also, don’t compare your journey to others; be kind to yourself. Surround yourself with a supportive community of like-minded individuals who can inspire and motivate each other. It’s also important to stay true to yourself and your unique voice as an artist. Trust your instincts and be persistent in pursuing your goals, even when faced with challenges or setbacks. Looking back, I wish I had known the value of networking and building connections with the industry early on. So, don’t hesitate to reach out, attend industry events, and collaborate with others.
