Today we’d like to introduce you to Aspyn Nykohl.
Hi Aspyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Whew! Well… I’m a copywriter, blogger, and mother.
As a young gal, I was alienated and brainwashed against my family. I moved from California to Virginia, then to Atlanta. Growing up, I dealt with physical and mental abuse as a reaction to my mother’s struggles. We lived in the car a few months during my school years, and I was still expected to thrive.
In middle school, I was taken away and went to live with my aunt. By high school, I had run away enough times to be sent to juvenile, twice. I knew wherever I’d be placed next, couldn’t be back where I had come from. I was released from Juvenile at 16 and placed with my mother again. I packed my things and planned to leave the next morning, but was allowed to take nothing.
So, I left with only the clothes on my body and took a two-day bus ride back home to California to be back with my father. Under his care, we learned my credit had been used down to a 360 score. Yep, a 360! My 17-year-old heart was crushed when T-mobile denied me my first cell phone.
By 18, I was chasing my journalist dreams! I moved from the I.E. to L.A. and quickly applied for every writing job I came across.
In 2014, I landed gigs with upcoming magazines and platforms, covered red-carpet events like the GRAMMYS, ESPYS Lounge, Slut Walk Press Conference, conducted interviews for FM hip hop, and more.
Then, I fell off in 2016 due to a lack of focus and lost my access to Hollywood and my network. Nevertheless, I became a mom in 2017 and knew it was time to trade my half-dead freelance career in for CEO— And in January 2021, I did just that.
The only difference between where I started and where I’m heading is that I’m not stopping!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The smoothest part of the road has been breathing in the mornings.
I’ve struggled with finding a supportive village, co-parenting, and rebuilding my credit as it was ruined before I even started my life. But the most important challenge has been healing childhood trauma. However, it’s also been the most rewarding for my soul.
Sometimes it’s difficult to keep a nanny I trust so I can cover work events, find quiet time to write and create, or have me-time to unwind. I’m learning to manage the balance, though.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a copywriter, journalist, and blogger. I own PYNN’d Productyns, a copywriting agency that specializes in B-2-C digital and print copy. We cater to helping entrepreneurs and businesses find the ‘write’ words to help sell their products, services, or partnerships. I also cover high-profile events.
In addition, I’m revamping my lifestyle blog titled: Pyns, Poyms, Poshyns, designed to uplift others with my story and journey as a mother, healing my inner child, and living life on my terms!
My fun, fresh, writing voice and originality sets me apart from others in my field. Also, my background – where I come from, what I’ve had to endure, and how I haven’t let that stop me or hold me down.
And, I’m definitely most proud of my motherhood. I’ve found strength in myself I didn’t know so had.
Only up from here!
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I definitely see blogging and copywriting taking over the industry across platforms because more and more people are becoming inspired by the lives and successes of others.
We once lived in a time where we only saw glitz and glamour. However, now the grit and grind are being highlighted because it’s more relatable than lights, cameras, and action, for most, anyway.
So I’m sure we can expect to see more influencers and bloggers across the globe as we are already on the rise, sharing our stories.
