Today we’d like to introduce you to Zegan Doyle.
Hi Zegan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a music video director. My preferred pronouns are they/them. I spend my free time hiking at Griffith Park and reading Turkish romances at the Korean spa. Although quiet by nature, I live for drama. I fell in love with cinema while studying art history at the University of Texas at Austin. My aspirations brought me to New York City where I worked as a creative consultant for television shows. I left my jet-setting corporate career to earn my MFA in Screenwriting at the University of California, Los Angeles. I received the William J. and Lee Phillip Bell / The Young and the Restless Fellowship. In 2021, I directed the visual album Massive Poetry in collaboration with The Friendships, an experimental pop band. I live in Los Angeles with my partner and our handsome kittens, Prince Otto and Saint Betty.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Every music video brings its own challenges. That’s what makes every project so much fun! I enjoy problem-solving because the creative solution is often even more innovative than the original concept. Plus, I am lucky to be able to collaborate with other artists to achieve singular vision.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What sets me apart is my background in art, dance, and music. I developed an appreciation for form and technique while studying art history. Through dance choreography, I learned the importance of conflict and action. The higher the contrast, the greater the tension, and the more powerful the emotional build-up. When I hear music, I immediately visualize a story and the style that will best represent that sound. I want to service the music above all else. Directing music videos is, to me, like choreographing a dance. Every movement, every cut, every artistic choice creates a universal visual language. That excites me.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have a few close friends with whom I confide. They read and watch my work at various stages and offer feedback. I also feel very lucky to have professionals in the industry who have championed my work.
