Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonia Iris Lozada.
Hi Sonia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a podcaster, poet and performer fascinated with perceptions of time, history, dreams, psychology, and the metaphysical. Most of all, I’m fascinated by interesting people, my guests on my podcast, Poetic Resurrection, Chica, and the Man and Overheard at Chica’s cafe, compliment my warmth, conversation, and genuine concern for what they have to say. As an actor for both stage and screen, I’ve appeared in films such as Out of the Wild and TV shows like Bosch Legacy and many others, I find this plays a role in my ability to entice guests to share what they know and feel with listeners.
Chicago native and a daughter to hard-working Puerto Rican parents. They were strong people who drilled lessons into my head: never lose your integrity, stay committed to your dreams, and always have a sense of humor about it. Poetry has always been my way of explaining the bi-cultural world around me. The #1 Amazon bestselling author’s publications include Inspire Me: Raw (2017), Follow Akashic Dreaming Through Time (2019), and Inspire Me: Perception (2019). My upcoming book, the third in the “Inspire Me” series, is titled Inspire Me: Awakening Dreams. There is currently a complication book which is a combination of the first two that inspired my book with a sneak peek at a few poems of Awakening Dreams. My book Follow: Akashic Dreaming Through Time is being adapted for film. Along with writing poetry, I’m currently working on a sci-fi story.
Poetic Resurrection – Exploring Perceptions podcast launched in February 2021 with great acceptance. This podcast is currently in its fifth season. It includes topics like poetry, writing, self-help, and asking self-reflecting questions.
I’m currently producing two other podcasts of which I am also the host. Chica and the Man is a light and fun podcast with podcaster and writer Alex Greenwood. Overheard at Chica’s Café is an entertainment podcast where I interview my entertainment friends, i.e., Actors, singers, and behind-the-scenes people and it is just about what we experience, our mishaps and it’s a laugh-out-loud type of show.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many challenges along the way of being a writer, podcaster, and actor. When I started acting, I was told that I would never work because I was too Latin looking. Now it’s very different. I love seeing the variety of cultures that are currently represented in the media.
Since I have been a self-starter with my projects, I had to find ways of getting my writing out by starting fanzines, newsletters, and publications. In acting, getting casting directors, directors, and producers to know who I am.
Because, if they don’t know you exist, you will not work.
One of the biggest obstacles anyone can have is, having to do it on their own. It’s so important to have a mentor. This is why I have donated my time to helping others when possible.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I feel what sets me apart from others is just being me. If you look at how we might interpret our work, be it acting, writing, poetry, or the visual arts. When we put ourselves into the work, then the work becomes unique.
I’m not any different from other creatives who put their heart and soul into their work. This is where we shine.
Giving myself permission was the challenge of being. But, when you give yourself permission and acceptance, then the creativity shines through.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t know about good or bad luck. I believe in the adage that when you are ready, the teacher will appear. So many times, I had wondered, what am I doing wrong because I was working so hard and nothing was materializing from my efforts? Then I picked up meditating and practicing gratitude for what I had, and situations started flowing. Grieving Dreams was a podcast episode I recorded on the Poetic Resurrection podcast, regarding giving up on your dreams and passions because they weren’t working out.
What I realized was my perceptions of what I expected. I wanted to make a living out of being an actor, but the truth was I wasn’t going to and that was heartbreaking. I just changed my perception to when auditions and roles come along, I will do them. Letting go of this has been a godsend because now I’m working more acting gigs. Just changing my perception made a world of difference.
