Today we’d like to introduce you to Sigail Currie.
Hi Sigail, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Sigail Currie. Many of you know me as an international fashion model, but what some of you may not know, is that I am an awesome candle maker!
I make affordable, luxury, eco-friendly candles made with all-natural soy, and coconut wax.
After many years of it being just an idea, Wax On Vine was finally born in January 2020. Shortly thereafter, in came the pandemic. Though it was an arduous year for most of us, I’ve managed to sustain the company, turning it into one of the most authentic candle company there are. Wax On Vine carries a total of 15 scents, however, fragrances are seasonal so only eight or nine are available at a time. Whether you’re a woody, earthy, sweet, or floral person I’ve got you covered.
Each candle is uniquely blended with 3 to 4 scents to create an exotic, calming, relaxing, and addictive fragrance.
My authenticity is also in my jars. I like textured containers because it shows a different aspect of my personality. I love the versatility my jars provides. You can get creative and turn them into anything you want: a candy jar, a flower jar, or a money jar. Each container comes with its own packaging and label, which is very sleek and minimal.
Besides candles, I also make bath salts and bath teas; made with natural fragrant oils, dried flowers, and herbs. I also stock wax melts in the same scents as the candles, so you can top up your favs. They come in little cute flower, heart, and diamond shapes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve spent the last two years building my brand; from what began as an idea, I’ve made my reality, a thriving candle company. Spending years as a fashion model, I’ve learnt some things along the way. This became an asset, I possessed the know how in styling, and branding and this was beneficial for my business.
In those two years I’ve also overcame the struggles in finding the right events for me, and booking those said events; you know, with the pandemic and all. I still maintained a presence in the industry, even though it took a lot of time and effort to keep the company up during those times, especially since it’s new.
After creating a whole line of products, I had to learn how to strategise. From sourcing the right materials such as: the wicks, fragrances, wax, and containers, to labelling, packaging and making the product itself. I had my target market in mind, I just needed to find the right chemistry of scents that would appeal to that group, with the right pricing. Anyone can almost afford anything, it’s the length of time to acquire it that differs. And so, with few adjustments, I’ve made it so that everyone can have a piece of heaven.
In retrospect, it hasn’t been easy; starting off as a model to becoming a proud business owner, but it was worthwhile. It is quite an experience, an interesting journey, and I had fun doing it!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As you know, I am an international fashion model, and I’ve worked with some of fashion’s biggest names such as: Italian Vogue, Alberto Ferretti, Agent Provocateur, YSL…. just to name a few. I have been modelling for 18 years now; the life of a model is hectic but rewarding.
As about my candle business, I basically do everything myself. I make the candles by hand because I like that sort of intimacy. With everything being so impersonal right now, I wanted my customers to have something carefully crafted by hands, and still be polished.
I have a few people on my team that does task-based stuff like: helping to decide the labelling, handling my social media, researching, and stuff like that. I on the other hand, do all the heavy lifting. I make the candles, design the labels and packaging, choose the scents, do the fulfilment (I get a hand every now and then with the big orders), I set up my pop-up shop in Melrose Trading Post, and I photograph the candles in different settings.
I loved modelling from a very young age but, it’s a different kind of love being the creative director/ CEO of my company.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I relish the beautiful sunsets here in California and the fact that we can experience the different in seasons. However, I don’t like the traffic. It takes forever to get to places hahaha.
