Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodrigo Vargas.
Hi Rodrigo, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was 5, my parents left Chicago where I was born and returned to Mexico City to start a new business and rejoin our large, extended family. As an artist, my love of painting and design led me to study architecture at a university in Mexico, then Boston, before landing at a well-known architectural firm in Los Angeles specializing in large-scale, commercial and civic projects all over the world. I hated it. For me, the work felt cold, impersonal and anonymous. My desire to be more hands-on, expressive, artistic and emotional led me to the world of hospitality interior design, working for Cheryl Rowley and then Trish Wilson. Both of them taught me very different yet important, aspects about our craft. Working out of my garage, I started Rodrigo Vargas Design Associates 12 years ago. Today, we’re a growing, multi-lingual team of 25 working out of a building we designed on trendy Melrose Avenue. I’m proud and inspired every day by the work we do and how we have grown.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I faced the same challenges as any other individual starting their own business, pursuing projects, hiring talent and the day-to-day balancing act from designing to billing- doing it ALL! I was lucky enough to have the support of the dynamic Los Angeles design community and client relationships build over the years in the industry.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My personal and professional styles couldn’t be more different. I’d describe my personal style as somewhat timeless — clean lines, classic shapes and silhouettes, a neutral palette. After looking at color, texture, pattern and materials all day for our clients at home my senses need to rest. As far a “signature” in my professional projects, our designs will always tell you a story, be memorable and create an emotional connection with you.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
When I was seven, I discovered Architectural Digest magazine, I thought it WAS architecture. I was captivated by the photographs and asked for a subscription.
