Conversations with Laura Bibbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Bibbs.

Laura, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started playing trumpet at a young age and decided pretty early on that this was going to be my career path. I attended school in Boston and NYC and ended up primarily working on the East coast before coming to LA.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I definitely struggled throughout college to find what was best for me, wasn’t sure where or what I wanted to do, just knew trumpet was the goal. It wasn’t until I got to New York where I started to flourish into my musical identity. I’m extremely grateful for my mentors at Manhattan School of Music, they let me be me. I also struggled with performance anxiety which made performing uncomfortable, and it’s taken years of meditation and learning about my body to overcome that challenge. Overall, I feel like after I graduated MSM, my life started falling into place.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a freelance trumpet player with a classical/contemporary background, primarily doing touring and session work at this time. I’ve performed in notable venues across the country, including the Kia Forum and the United Center. I most recently played the North American leg of Love On Tour with Harry Styles and I’m most proud of performing 15 nights at Madison Square Garden on tour.

How do you define success?
I think success is self-determination. I used to feel like success was rooted in competition, “How can I make more money? That will make me successful!” but that’s not real. The only competition is with yourself and I believe everything you do to get to the next step (on any path) is a step in the light of success.
