Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Scimone.
Hi Kyle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a writer, I’m obligated to start by mentioning to everyone that I’m a writer…
For me, it started in the 6th grade when our theatre instructor let a couple of the students rewrite Robin Hood for our school play. It was awful. But it was fun! I continued with theatre and art classes but my love for varsity sports took hold in high school.
After graduation, I pursued sports into my early 20s but kept writing on the side all the while. Once I knew my sports career had run its course, I exclusively focused on my writing.
I continued my education at FullSail University and graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts.
It was in my graduating year of college that I decided to move to Los Angeles and pursue my Screenwriting dream as a career.
I can proudly say that I am making that dream a reality.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not to brag or anything, but it’s been pretty difficult.
My first month in LA, I slept on a blow-up mattress at a buddy’s house. Once I got my apartment, I couldn’t afford internet so I had to complete my final year of online schooling using free Wi-Fi at coffee shops, my place of work, the local bar, wherever.
After graduating, I got straight to networking and finding like-minded individuals in the film industry. Which is arguably the hardest part of it all.
You find out quickly that not everyone is as generous with information, their contacts, or their time as an amateur writer would hope. Projects fall through. People move. People get promoted. People get greedy. A number of unforeseen obstacles arise, and staying persistent is crucial.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in writing screenplays.
My forte is full feature, action and adventure, but who doesn’t love a good crime drama.
I’ve been known to jot some cheeky dialogue. I really enjoy dueling conversation amongst characters. Real people speak sporadically, often incorrectly. Authentic dialogue is not found in books or in text. It is said aloud and captured by a writer’s ear.
My dialogue schemes separated me from a lot of new writers coming out of the pandemic. I truly believe it’s because my attitude was so scorn that I funneled it into my antagonists as a release. And that allowed me to create more interesting heroes. I don’t recommend this, but it worked for me.
By far, the thing I am most proud of is the first full feature spec script that I wrote, There Were 11. (Shout out to The Fam)
Our dear friend, Nick Vance, passed away unexpectedly and that spec script was written in his honor. One day, it will be a movie.
What sets me apart from others is the amount of passion I have for what I do. I do this because it’s who I am. I couldn’t stop if I wanted to. It’s as simple as that.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
There is so much to love about this city! I remember saying “I would never live in Los Angeles,” and now I’m 5 years in and enjoying every moment of it, except the traffic.
What I like and dislike about this city is the growing homeless population. As someone who was once on the brink of homelessness, it’s a very prominent issue. I hope we as a city and a state for that matter continue to address homelessness and seek resolution. There are so many ways to contribute to those in need, please don’t underestimate what a simple handout can do for someone down on their luck. One day, it might be you, so be kind.
