Conversations with Kenia Contreras

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenia Contreras.

Kenia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a creative and sensitive Mexican woman who is passionate about cooking. I love food in different presentations and I share my recipes online which have a very special secret ingredient, ‘Love’. Because I believe that your feelings and emotions when you are cooking affect the taste of your dishes.

My passion for the culinary arts started when I was very young. I used to cook with my mom all the time and one of my favorite memories it’s me baking Pound cake with my grandma. She was a great cook and she taught me so much. So in 2009, I started my baking business while I was in High School, selling lemon pies and chocolate cake slices just to my friends, later that year I officially started my online bakery, making pre-ordered cakes for birthdays and religious celebrations. I did that while I was attending college. A couple of years later and many courses after, I specialized as a cake designer and fondant decorator. Additionally, I used to teach baking classes at my parent’s dining room.

In 2015, I opened my bakery “Tili” in Mexico. It was a huge dream and I made it come true thanks to my family, friends and customer support, but after three years I decided to close it and start my journey to achieve a bigger dream in New York.

I moved to the USA and my professional life had a 360-degree change. While I was looking for a professional career in New York, the Universe brought me the opportunity to try and create dishes using new ingredients and different rules to cook. Now I am currently working on my blog keniaconsan.com where I post recipes and share all my cooking acknowledge to inspire others to create my recipes at home.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe that the most difficult part is believing in myself, to believe and to create an entire world to achieve your goals. It has been a personal effort to grow and to find my self-confidence, of course there are cloudy days where I want to give up and have an “easier” work but the truth is when you are passionate about something, you are able to feel the call to keep going. I understood that I can’t run away from me and my dreams, my passion for food and to use love as an ingredient to cook.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a pastry chef who currently posts recipes on Instagram and Facebook. I´m creating my youtube channel where I want to share explained techniques, it will be ready in November 2021.

I am hosting “Par de Latinas” a podcast where we talk about life in another country. We are two friends who moved from their home-country to the USA and talked about how life is here our personal experiences and adventures. We are creating a community for people in the same situation as us so we can feel home through our podcast and stories.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Definitely to find my personal voice and be congruent to what I want to share and teach to others is very important for me to give to others the best of me. This is my way to contribute to a better and conscious world. I would like to take a look in the past to see all the amazing things I´ve been creating, and how through my classes I empowered other women to achieve their goals and their own local business.
