Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Puente.
Hi elizabeth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a 24-year-old plus-size fashion and beauty content creator and a four years professional brand marketer. I am also a former pageant queen titleholder I represented the state of Zacatecas Mexico in Los Angeles from 2018 in 2019 and then that work I supported the Mexican community abroad and in LA by helping implement projects that help create access to needs in Zacatecas Mexico such as water such as wheelchairs for elderly people and help bring parents from Zacatecas over to LA to be reunited with their undocumented children here in Los Angeles.
I am a first-generation Mexican American from Zacatecas, Mexico. And my beginnings start here in LA specifically in the San Fernando Valley where as a child my parents taught me to protest for immigrant rights and pathways to citizenship. I believe that my parents teaching me those things at the young age of five really shaped who I wanted to be and what I want to bring in my professional career as well as my social platforms. I grew up on YouTube content creators and for such a long time I wanted to step into a creative space however, I did not have the resources nor the knowledge to step in until I became older. I also do not have the body type that is deemed successful in society when I was a child in the early 2000s so overcoming that and I’m proceeding to post about plus size outfits and plus size beauty is definitely something I had to overcome to get here.
As for my professional life my childhood beginnings of protesting and understanding people’s differences and supporting causes for others not just myself really shaped how I am as a marketer today. I am not a tunnel vision marketer I believe that my background and my experience as a first-generation Mexican American really help me look into other people’s experiences and contribute to telling their stories or tapping into what brings them joy in my work. I am currently a community manager at a Latinx lifestyle brand and take care of establishing events that bring the community together whether it’s a club night or an interactive shopping experience, My goal is to always create those safe spaces for people to enjoy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The primary struggle is accessed. I’m still finishing up my bachelor’s degree because I have to pay for it. And going to school and having to work at the same time and looking for jobs that pay me well or pay me enough to handle bills and get me through school has been a challenge. In the creative space, it’s been a challenge to grow sometimes because I know that my body is not the social standard so there has been times where there have been mean comments, there have been times where my cultural videos of me existing as a LA girl have not been as prioritize as white transplants and their experiences have. I believe that they were still struggling to create a space for Latina creators because Brands are not looking at us even though they say they are. Marketing teams need to be more diverse.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Genz Latina marketer. I am currently a community manager in a Latinx lifestyle brand and I specialize in creating brand awareness via assisting brand activations scouting for photo shoots booking talent, and assisting in the development of content creation. In my previous work, I have also been a brand marketer and have contributed to the marketing rollout for over 40 gyms in the United States for crunch fitness. In that work, I took the lead in assuring that our message was always inclusive and safe for all bodies and all abilities to work out. Along with ensuring that this was reflected in photo shoots, ads, and social.
What makes me most proud is knowing that the Brand activations that I’ve assisted in have been inclusive have been diverse, have been a safe space and have kept audiences asking for more.
I like to think of myself as a person with 20 tick-tock‘s in the back of her head I adore Tik Tok and love working with Tik Tok for any brand that I work with.
As for my personal professional career I have been part-time plus size modeling for over two years and I am a freelance content creator for brands I have modeled for Ban.do, MeUndies, and several Latinx Brands. I create UTC for brands at the moment and I’m loving every second of it I love developing content on my own and being another diverse face and another creative Latina in the space. My wish is to be part of the change in which Latinas are at the forefront and respected for their culture their professionalism and their creativity.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Listening. Consistency. Extroverted Ness, looking out for myself and for others. Honesty.
