Conversations with Elina Huang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elina Huang.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My passion for art started when I was still a child. I’m fascinated and greatly inspired by the tales and worlds in animated films. I could spend an entire day with a pen and paper to create my own saga with different characters and bizarre creatures. I fell in love with the freedom and happiness painting brought me. Since then, creating meaningful art has become my goal and dream, and I made up my mind to pursue art as my career. With the support and encouragement of my family and friends, I became a student at ArtCenter College of Design and continue to chase my dream.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path of studying art is not easy. When I was still a child, all I heard when presenting my artwork were kind compliments. But after I entered college and stepped more into society, I realized that there would always be outstanding artists with much more talent than I could ever imagine. When working on a project, it’s very often that when I put a great amount of effort to accomplish an artwork and turned it in with great hope, only to get rejected with tons of things that needed to be revised. And I couldn’t remember how many times were there when I struggled a lot but just could not come up with an idea for art. But when I finally made it and looked back to all the ups and downs along the path, I felt all the obstacles and troubles were worth it. Making art is not easy, but the pain, experiences learned from failures, inspiration brought by others, joy of creation and happiness of achievement are what made it so beautiful.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently studying Entertainment Design major at ArtCenter College of Design. I focus on 2D and CG animation, and visual development, especially character design. I love designing different characters, from fairy-tale creatures to real-life people, with different background stories and making them come to life with illustration and animation. I enjoy expressing and painting what is truly in my mind rather than competing with others for uniqueness. I always believe someone will find something unique and shining in my art.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
As an art student, I still have so much to learn from the industry. During my research for art references, I notice that art today is getting more closely related to our real lives. With the increasing diversity of society, the form and content of art are given more freedom to express the artist’s inner thoughts and wishes for today and the future. The outcomes, including animations, films, and game designs, reflect our hope and desire to live our lives and be what we choose to be.
