Today we’d like to introduce you to Eduardo Ramirez-Gonzalez.
Eduardo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was raised on the Colombian Pacific Coast, expending my days between my two passions: the study of the light and scuba diving in the ocean.
From an early age I showed a lot interest in cameras and I learned from my parents how to use a photo camera, I learned how the sunset light was so special, I remember how my mother with some savings and a lot of work always helped me to follow this path.
From a basic 35mm Vivitar 3300 photo camera I discovered how incredible it was capturing the time, the moment, and the light.
Actually, I am an active Member of the Local 600 International Cinematographer Guild, The ADFC, Colombian Society of Cinematographers, and I take an active part in the World Wide Collective @Sporas: Artisans For a Change. plus I was recently added to the ARRAY Crew community Created by the Director Ava DuVernay with the intention to expand diversity in Hollywood.
I attend the San Antonio de Los Baños Film School located in Cuba and I did my Master Degree Based on Feature Film Cinematography in The Prague Film School Located in Czech Republic, my college degree is in journalism and mass media communications from the Autonoma University in Colombia.
I am Married to an amazing wife and I’m a proud father of two incredible boys. For me, family goes first. The most important for me is The support of my family in every step of this huge path called Cinematography, they are the motor of all this.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Never is smooth, but the struggle makes us stronger and helps to develop many virtues that will help to build you as a human, and as a person. you need to challenge yourself every second and at the same time respect the process and never forget the people, friends , colleagues that have been with you all these years.
I started my career 3 times, every time when I moved to a new city was a new start, and I always did it with the happiness to discover new stuff, the necessity of learning and improving. The adventure is a great motivator.
I moved to Los Angeles 6 years ago, and it was a complete new start, new city, new country, new language, literally new everything. But all the knowledge acquired over my years helped me to understand and take action quickly, adapt to the city, the industry and the language, so I was able to conquer so many challenges and recognise my abilities and weaknesses.
THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON IS THE DESTRUCTION OF YOUR EGO, REBUILD YOURSELF AND COME BACK AS A BETTER HUMAN.
I’m Coming from a small country in comparison to the EE UU and from a growing film industry as the Colombian one, that creates a fake version of the film business, a mirage, you are really comfortable with that life, you think you are at the top of your game, until you really challenge yourself in other places.
I have worked outside Colombia before and I worked in many international productions such as Narcos Season 1 for Netflix among others, but nothing gets you ready for what you will face here.
When I move to EE UU I discover myself competing with top professionals and 100 times more people, then you see how your sand castle is falling apart, and that is the beauty on your rebuild, for me is always exiting, yes I got worry but in the same time I grow as a human, as a person, I lear in every step and I continue learning constantly. Never be scared, always be aware , and be the strongest, that keeps me going. And this is not only about work, it is about my life as a Husband, Parent and citizen.
I think adaptability is a keyword in my life. but the reality is never backup is push and if you are depressed or tired, push even more that will keep you busy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a professional and artist, I achieved over the years amazing features films, Tv series, and Commercials. I show a selected taste in the color use and camera movement, with a deep knowledge in the technical side and an extensive awareness on the art side, a perfect mix for a Cinematographer. and I said this very proud, my clients are so happy, they enjoy working with me.
I enjoy every day the decision to come over here with my wife and begin this new chapter 6 years ago, it brings amazing things to us, was a huge decision that has been an even huge reward.
My work has been recognized in major Films Festivals around the world, I achieved Best Cinematography awards in Renowned Festivals as Huelva in Spain and Gramado in Brazil, adding to the festivals list I was nominated in Miami, Colombia, Houston, U.K among others. I was part of the Dp’s that shoot the major Tv Series Narcos – Netflix, season 1.

and A very interesting Action Film, Spy style named Dark Asset, all these movies will premiere in 2022.
I was selected as a Brand Ambassador for Major Brands in the Film industry, they picked me for my knowledge and I guess my personality, the brands work closely with me developing content and testing products before they hit the markets, I ‘ve been helping with my ideas and contributions to a new generation of lenses and Lights.
The name of the Brands are:
Rosco – Tokina Lenses – Easyrig – Xeen lenses – Vaxis – Cartoni – Bebop – Yinchem
What sets me apart from the others? I think it is my strength, I like to push forward and never stop, I have a very strong will power.
As an artist, I bring a lot to the table, but what my clients like is the way I embrace the work, I always bring good energy and a different approach that helps a lot when you are working in a stressful situation. I always find a solution, for me will be painful going to sleep with a feeling that i didn’t did the best.
