Conversations with David Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Thompson.

Hi David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I picked up my first camera back around 2004. My first camera was a 35mm film camera. I had no idea how to work that camera. I would just turn the power on and shoot….well, try and shoot. I was awful! At the time, I didn’t understand light, composition, or anything else that made for a decent image. Over time I slowly progressed. It was until I got my first digital camera in 2008 when I started to understand photography and the process of image-making. When I say understand photography more, this is simply the basics at its lowest level. As I progressed, I continued to grow and evolve. My eye continued to get stronger over time, and I started to mature as a person. As I got older, I started to see the world differently and started to have a deeper appreciation and connection with the landscape around me. From there, the rest is history! Where I am at now with my photography took a lot of patience, persistence, many failures, and not willing to give up.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been smooth at all. For me, the biggest challenge is dealing with self. Trying to stay motivated when you are in creative ruts or not feeling very inspired. I feel every artist goes through these struggles during their journey. When the motivation isn’t there, it’s challenging to create. I have been able to manage this over the years by just going out with my camera with no expectations or specific images in mind. I just need to put myself into nature and just be present at the time, not thinking about what I am going to do or what I want to photograph. It is just merely getting re-connected with nature and my camera. Most times, I will end up making an image that I like that will spark the creativity again. Just the disconnection from the daily routines helps me get back into the creative groove as well.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
With my photography, I would not say I “specialize” in any particular area, but my photography is based on nature/landscape. I love to capture nature and its elements at its best. I feel my landscape photography work is very diverse in many ways. I capture the landscape from the air to its smallest form on the ground. My work consists of forests, deserts, coasts, some mountain areas, but generally speaking, I am all over. Being that my work is so diverse, that diversity separates me from many others in this medium. Along with my development(post-processing) skills of my images.

As for the work that I am most proud of, I would say my imagery from the bayous of the southern United States is the imagery that I have put a lot of time and effort in over the years. My body of work from the area is one that I am proud of. I connect with the landscape in the bayou. My imagery from the area captures the essence of the bayou…..which is eerie, creepy, and strikingly beautiful. There’s no other landscape like this in the world!

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
