Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Siobhan Mol.
Danielle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Photographer and Model. I’m a storyteller on both sides of the camera.
I was born and raised in Amsterdam and Dublin, currently living and working as assistant art editor for Wallpaper* City Guides in London.
Since the age of 16, I’ve assisted several photographers in Amsterdam, London and New York City, where I’ve worked alongside: Alexi Lubomirski, Pieter Henket, Tim Zaragoza, Jasper Abels, Marcel van Driel, Boom Productions, Atelier Management and Haut Studios working at several different sets and studios including Tim Walker Studio London and Irving Penn Studio New York.
My modelling career has brought me all around the world and therefore, I’ve been able to photograph the most beautiful places and this year, I fell in love with Los Angeles.
Has it been a smooth road?
Obstacles are there to be tripped over and challenges are there to be taken.
We all have to get over these two things to get to where we want to be. Especially as a female assistant photographer, I’ve been told many, many times that ‘this job’ was not made for women. Which obviously motivated me to prove them wrong…
Everyone I’ve worked with has taught me something and that’s when I realized that all mistakes you make in life, you learn from.
And one piece of advice which I’ve learned out of the experience that I would like to share is, is that success comes with jealousy. But make sure you never let people drag you down and don’t ever take things personally. Because if you do so, you won’t survive.
That’s the power of criticism. Listen and learn. Be open to what life is trying to teach you.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Danielle Siobhan Mol story. Tell us more about the business.
With a love for travel and food, I started to specialize in food, lifestyle and travel photography from the moment I picked up my camera.
What I’m most proud of would be the fact that I can say that I’ve shot several covers and stories for high fashion magazines and I’ve worked as a photographer and retoucher for clients such as: Wallpaper*, Phaidon, Zara, JAN Magazine, Somewhere Magazine, Witloft and &C Magazine. And this at the age of 22.
My work has been published and my face has been shown. I’ve never not tried something and I’ve always followed my dreams. ‘Never dream too big and do what you love so you’ll never have to work a day’.
I definitely can say that my positivity and professional work attitude has brought me to where I am today. So, what they say is true: hard work pays off, believe in yourself and if you want something, you’ll make it happen. But the key ingredient will always be humbleness. Work hard for what you want in life, it doesn’t come if you sit on your lazy arse. Not even the Irish luck can solve this problem! 😉
So if I’m happy about what I achieved so far? ‘Oh, I couldn’t ask for more!
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Today, we live in 2018, the year of feminism and self-love. Women stand together to support each other and so this is your chance to feel confident. The power is within you.
Nowadays, women are taking over any kind of business. Art directors, photographers, retouchers and even fire brigades or police are no longer only men which is something that has drastically changed in the last few years.
So, there are lots of opportunities for women! It’s just a matter of getting out of your comfort zone and take everything that comes along.
Getting out of your comfort zone is terrifying, but there’s nothing scarier than being stuck in it.
