Community Highlights: Meet Wendy Do of Boss Beauty Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Do.

Hi Wendy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started in 1982 when I was four years old; my parents made the life-changing decision to flee the communist country of Vietnam by boat in hopes of a better future for me and my siblings. Upon fleeing, we were stranded at sea for seven days and six nights. We were robbed by pirates; resulting in the loss of all personal documents, photography, and everything that was valuable. My mom was pregnant with my brother at the time. We were rescued by the Malaysian coast guards where we stayed for a few weeks then went to the Philippines as refugees for roughly three months, where my mom gave birth to by baby brother until we finally received the news that the catholic church sponsored us to be able to fly to America. Oklahoma was where we first step foot on American soil. Coming from a tropical climate to winter was something we couldn’t get used to. Fortunately, we had some relatives in California; and so the American dream began… Growing up very poor in southern California with my eight siblings (one sister, seven brothers) was tough but we always had each other. My parents hustled hard, always trying to provide the best life they could for us. I am forever grateful to them for pushing me to become a manicurist.

At 17, I flew to New York to a little town called Peekskill where I learned how to do acrylic nails which became my specialty. In the nail salon was where I found my love for eyebrow shaping which lead me to get my esthetician license in 2005. I also got into bridal hair and makeup then eyelash extensions. All of my clients came from referrals. I’m a visual person and a fast learner. All of the services that I provided have been self-taught, you can say I get a lot of that from my parents. I had my first child at 20 and married to the love of my life at 21, three children later here I am today with my supportive husband of over 20 years and a new baby, my beauty boutique. Through my experiences, I found my passion and purpose in making one feel beautiful and confident in themself is truly rewarding. Owning my own beauty boutique and doing what I love on a daily basis makes me appreciate my journey and how far I’ve come.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Having three children in my mid-twenties put my career on hold that carried on to my thirties. Balancing family and work, trying to find my nitch and what ignites my passion, was prolonged. I didn’t know how to grow as an eyebrow artist until I heard of microblading in 2015. Even though I’ve been shaping brows for over 15 years, the microblading training I received was discouraging due to improper training. If it weren’t for the determination and confidence I had in myself, I would’ve given up. I did a lot of researching and practicing before my work started speaking for itself.
