Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Nguyen.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started falling in love with music when I was in middle school. I remember being really into anime and Japanese rock, scouring through obscure websites on dial-up internet to find songs during a time when Spotify did not exist, and everyone wanted an iPod Nano. As a deeply emotional child, I often felt misunderstood by my school and peers, pretty much society in general. I grew up in an environment where no one spoke about emotions or boundaries or knew about nonviolent communication. The musicians I looked up to shed light on this dark time in my life and became my heroes, and I wanted to be on stage one day just like them. Some of my favorite bands at the time were L’Arc~en~Ciel, X Japan, and MUCC.
During my undergrad at UCLA, I studied meditation and Reiki healing and became certified as a teacher. These modalities helped me address and heal from the past and allowed me to start integrating my inner child self, including the parts of myself that loved music. At this time, I started listening to a lot of EDM music, with Porter Robinson being one of my favorite producers. Slowly, I began to feel a strong calling to create my own music. In 2017 I started taking DJ lessons and bought gear to play my own shows and gigs. I also bought Ableton and learned to produce my own music, ranging from ambient meditation tracks to chill-hop and electro-pop. My latest single, Carousel, is now streaming on all platforms through Moonbabe Records.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part, the struggles I’ve faced as a performer have been internal. I get nervous and sleepless before an event or a show (especially if I’m the one putting on an event). There’s been weeks where I stay awake until 3 am just thinking about logistics, ticket sales, programming, my set list, etc. I’ve gotten a bit better over time by journaling my thoughts and getting off my phone and computer an hour before bedtime to help me wind down.
As an entrepreneur, a lot of the challenges I face are external because I am dealing with clients. Sometimes they can be extremely demanding, and other times they are unresponsive. I’ve had clients say that they will book me, only to back out last minute after ignoring my emails. It’s not the best feeling in the world, but I’ve learned to trust that people come and go, and what is meant for me will always come through.
We’ve been impressed with DJ Deitii, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a mobile DJ serving Orange/LA County. I work with a wide network of talent and vendors and specialize in creating immersive experiences for weddings, parties, and corporate events. My business values are creativity and excellence. The creativity comes from my background as performing artist; I have an eye and ear for crafting the perfect audio and visual production for my audience. With all this attention to detail, I break the “flaky DJ” stereotype by anticipating my client’s needs and keeping an open channel of communication to ensure proper setup, music, and theming for every event. DJ Deitii is not just a DJ but a creative powerhouse with a passion for excellence in performance.
How do you define success?
Success for me is defined both as a sense of accomplishment and as a period of integration and celebration. Sometimes it involves constant growth and improvement. For example, if I look back six months to one year ago and see that I’ve met the goals that I set out for myself during that time, I feel successful.
Sometimes the path to success is not always straightforward. I also feel successful after going through periods of adversity and unexpected challenges. To be able to navigate the ups and downs of life is a cause to celebrate, even if I haven’t reached 100% of my goals.
