Community Highlights: Meet Marisa Saavedra-Gutierrez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa Saavedra-Gutierrez.

Hi Marisa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello and thanks so much for the opportunity to share my journey!   My name is Marisa and I’m addicted to space and what space can do for your overall well-being.  When I think back to my interior design origin story, I’m certain it began when I was in high school, and I started investing in custom frames for my Marilyn Monroe artwork and photography! My teenage bedroom was my haven and the layout and purpose of it was always very intentional. My hard-earned restaurant hostess paycheck was well-spent on decorations for my room!  My love for space planning continued to thrive and grow, so it makes sense that I have gravitated to this industry.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Hmmm… well, I think the best way to describe the road to my interior design career is to compare it to a rodeo. I was bucked off the horse more times than I can count, and when I wasn’t dusting myself off, I was trying to figure out how in the world I could make this pipedream work. At least that’s the daily conversation I would have with myself while trying to rationalize leaving a secure, decent-paying job, with benefits, that comfortably supported my family.

Launching a completely new career was terrifying, exhilarating and something that I just knew I had to do once I got a taste of what creative autonomy meant for my life.

I enrolled in design school while working as a secretary for a District Court judge. From there, my path to finishing my degree began slowly, very, very slowly, over a five-year period, on and off, while working and raising a family.

The struggle, the self-doubt and the triumphs along the way were worth it, and I firmly believe those challenges I encountered helped me become a resourceful, thick-skinned, and confident businesswoman and entrepreneur.

We’ve been impressed with Spatial Harmony Color Consulting + Design, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own and operate an interior design company which specializes in Residential and Commercial design. Residential projects range from new construction (custom-built homes) to whole-house or individual room remodels and interior styling projects. Commercial projects range from leasing office remodels to whole apartment building exterior paint selections. I love working with clients and always tout that I am here to navigate their vision of their perfect home and every vision is different. I am most known for listening to my clients’ style needs and what makes sense for their particular lifestyles. I do not believe in a signature style that I stamp on each project, but rather, take pride in sourcing and creating a design that inspires and creates harmony in the space. I believe this is what sets me apart from others.

Design, in all its beauty and glory have led me down many paths since I started my career almost ten years ago. Most recently and in addition to my design company, my new business partner and I launched a product line called Lavender Road Handcrafted Luxury, which is a collection of the most amazing Turkish accent pillows, towels, and tableware. This new endeavor is an absolute dream come true for me!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The most important lesson I learned from the Covid-19 Crisis is to think outside the box and find creative ways to market myself and my services.

I have fine-tuned my online presence and as a result, have received business from my website and social media sites. These tools have been absolutely invaluable for my business.
