Community Highlights: Meet Lupe Mora De Marchante of PEN & HONEY BOOKSTORE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lupe Mora De Marchante.

Hi Lupe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My journey to open a bookstore started in 1996 when I first learned English and subsequently won a district-wide storytelling contest that same year. That year, writing ignited a passion in me for the first time. Then, in 2010 while in college, I discovered Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s timeless work, “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” Up to that moment, I couldn’t understand how reading alone could support a supposed type of teleportation. Yet, Marquez did just that for me; the magical realism felt like inherent truth and reading his works after that brought a new joy and fascination for books, ultimately leading me to launch Pen & Honey Bookstore.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We just recently launched as an online-only bookstore, so the road thus far has been pretty smooth and fun, but experience has taught me that every path has its hills and valleys, so we’re excited for what lies ahead.

We’ve been impressed with PEN & HONEY BOOKSTORE, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
PEN & HONEY BOOKSTORE is a woman-owned, SoCal-based indie bookstore with a cultural mosaic of delicately selected authors & titles. We take pride in our book recommendations and love to offer them to anyone who’ll hear them! We value all authors but are particularly proud of our growing collection of locally sourced independent books.

We are a #BABED!, Inc. brand—a publishing and bookselling company rooted in self-love that promotes diverse writers and advocates for inclusive storytelling. The utterance of our mantra, “I am B-A-B-E-D,” summons the energy of our five foundational pillars: Believed. Appreciated. Beautiful. Empowered. Determined.
