Community Highlights: Meet Khajag Bornazyan of Bornazyan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khajag Bornazyan.

Hi Khajag, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Our story starts in a traditional Armenian household located in Sun Valley, CA. My family consists of my parents, Gevork and Youghaper Bornazyan, and my two older brothers, Sarkis and Krikor Bornazyan. My dad immigrated to the United States from Armenia (then still part of the Soviet Union) in the 1980s to escape the harsh regime.

My mom grew up in Beirut, Lebanon, amongst the Armenian population that lived there. During her teens, the country fell into a brutal civil war. Eventually, she and her family escaped the war-torn country and made their way to the United States.

Both my parents fled hardship and came to America with hopes and dreams, and nothing in their pockets; through hard work, perseverance, and dedication to doing things the right way, they were able to start an Armenian family and build successful careers for themselves. Ever since we were kids, my parents strived to instill in my brothers and me the same principles and habits that contributed to their success.

Obtaining a high-level education and dedicating ourselves to mastering our professions was always a primary focus. My brothers and I always did well in school and were straight-A students. Sarkis obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from UC Irvine, then got a certificate of accounting from UCLA, passed the CPA exam on his first attempt, and is currently working towards a Master’s degree in taxation at CSUN.

I followed Sarkis’s example and created my own path in Accounting by getting my Bachelor’s in Professional Accountancy from CSUN. I also passed the CPA exams on my first attempt, and in 2021 was officially licensed as a CPA. At this point, we had both achieved a critical milestone in becoming well-established professionals, but we were not content and knew there was still a lot more to accomplish.

Our dream was to start our own accounting practice, as brothers; ever since we were both in school, we planned and did everything we could to make that a reality. Sarkis and I both worked for several firms in the San Fernando Valley and Westwood areas, sometimes together at the same firm. We gained valuable experience working together as well as expertise in our field and understood the many complexities of how to run a business.

We also realized there were areas in our profession that needed improvement, and we could do better. During the COVID pandemic, we felt it was time to start our own practice, and in August of 2021, we made our dream a reality. We founded Bornazyan & Bornazyan, LLP, an accounting firm set to change the industry for the better.

Our mission is to provide the most convenient, transparent, and professional service possible to our clients by utilizing modern technology. We are very pleased with our first-year results and look forward to growing our practice to service as many clients as possible.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have always been challenges in academia, finding employment, and eventually, having the confidence to make the leap to start our own firm.

The main challenge we face right now, as is with every new business, is growing our practice and getting our name out to the public so people can get to know and trust us.

With the incredible support we have been receiving from our family and friends, we have and will continue to push through all challenges we face; the success we have seen so far validates the approach we have taken and fuels our drive to keep moving forward.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Bornazyan & Bornazyan LLP is a fully virtual accounting firm located in Burbank, CA. We specialize in tax and bookkeeping services for clients of all demographics, from regular individuals to multimillion-dollar business entities.

We have knowledge and experience working with clients in a variety of fields and have gained valuable insight into their industries to provide them with professional advice. Our services include income tax preparation for entities and individuals, income tax planning and projections, IRS and FTB representation, bookkeeping services, and much more.

We are different from old-school brick-and-mortar accounting firms; by utilizing modern technology, we create convenience rather than complexity. The typical tax preparation experience is you have to dress up formally, gather up all your paper documents, drive to your accountant’s office to drop them off, and afterward, you probably have no idea what happened to your return.

You end up getting a bland explanation along with a copy of your return and documents at the very end, and you repeat this process again the following year. This setup is lacking a personal approach to professional service, and we want to change that. We want to be a resource and friend to our clients throughout the year, not just once a year during tax season.

We strive to provide convenient, transparent, and professional services to our clients. By offering virtual and mobile services, our clients have a convenient experience with us. We have a cloud-based infrastructure in place which allows us to complete all our services safely and securely from any location.

Our clients can seamlessly share files with us electronically from the comfort of their own homes, which saves them the hassle of having to drive to an office and drop off documents; this approach is also eco-friendly because it saves a lot of paper and ink from going to waste, as well as gas from driving back and forth.

For our clients who prefer to meet face-to-face, we drive to the location of their choice to provide onsite services, so they never have to be burdened to travel if they do not want to. We strive to be transparent by communicating with our clients every step of the way in whatever service we provide.

We are upfront with our fees, which creates peace of mind with our clients since there will not be unwarranted billing. We ensure our clients are aware of everything we are doing and do not leave anything to surprise. Finally, we strive to provide top-notch, one-on-one professional services to our clients, as they expect from two CPAs.
