Community Highlights: Meet Joanne Giang of Braindom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanne Giang.

Hi Joanne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As the oldest of four children to immigrant parents, I followed the traditional expectations while helping to raise my siblings. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Management and Human Resource from Cal Poly Pomona and persistently worked up to multiple senior positions at the IKEA store in West Covina, CA.

I’m forever grateful and appreciative to my parents for instilling what it means to lead by example to my siblings, I applied the same work ethics and abilities to lead at the workplace. During my eight years at IKEA, one of my most fruitful accomplishments was developing and implementing systems to foster sustainable and effective team communication and management throughout the different departments of the company. As a first-generation Asian-American female at a senior position, not to mention the youngest senior leader, I was fortunate I had mentors that understood Asian cultural upbringing and barriers at the workplace. I strongly believe in developing and empowering my teams to bring their unique contribution to the organization, my leadership and accomplishments were recognized on a National level as IKEA FOOD Manager.

The individual and organizational impact I witnessed as a result of my leadership capabilities led me to start my own journey in 2017, to help small businesses increase productivity by improving company culture. Fast forward to 2020, my company Braindom LLC is known for shifting company culture to be more people-centric through a Sustainable People Operating System that will unlock the potential of people. As a personal mission to have more Asian representation at the senior and executive level, I serve on the board for the non-profit 501(c)(3), National Association of Asian American Professionals. Since 2018, I was quickly drawn to their mission to Build Leaders, and I wanted to be a part of the shift in Asian-American landscape.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road and I don’t expect it to. The main struggle on my journey is having the right people to mentor and guide me to find my own voice and authentic way of working. People have good intentions, but they can only teach me what they know, and most of the time, it is not enough for me to break out of my own Asian leadership box. As I continue to grow as an individual and as a business owner, I realized I need a community of like-minded individuals to grow and learn with. The NAAAP Community has helped me see my unique contribution and potential for meaningful impact.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Braindom LLC?

It’s a win-win-win scenario when organizations make people a priority in their business plan.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
What people don’t know about me is, I’m always curious and learning about myself and those around me. I operate in a mind-set to treat others the way THEY want to be treated, not the way I want to be treated. Every person I interact with, I ask myself, ‘what lesson am I suppose to learn here?’. Everyone has their own challenges, and if I can have true compassion and understanding of others, we would learn and grow together as people.
