Hi Jihan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Founder of Zeen Candle Company Born to Jamaican immigrant parents in Queens, New York, I migrated to Los Angeles to continue my creative pursuits while juggling a 10+ year digital marketing career that started on the east coast. Zeen Candle Company was born out of a need for a luxury but safe candle burning experience. The toxins found in your everyday candle severely affect our health without us even knowing. The Caribbean is home to some of the most natural herbs and remedies and they have always played a part in my upbringing. I wanted to bring that sense of home, safeness, and warmth to the Zeen experience.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No road is smooth, if so, what would be the point of challenges? There is so much to learn when starting a new business. One struggle for me was learning to delegate my time. When I first started Zeen, I was also working full time. As a new business owner, you are so hands on in all parts of your operation, it’s expected to feel overwhelmed. Learning to give myself set blocks of time to complete tasks for separate parts of the business has helped me a LOT.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
A contemporary candle brand, merging all-natural ingredients and notes from the West Indies. Our candles are hand-crafted, using a conundrum of Caribbean-esque aromas, for generational candle burners who are making more mindful choices to relax. For the ones shifting their self-care narrative, earning their luxury, and increasing their scent scale, ZEEN. I created this line with a desire to honor past and present. Many of the principles we learn come from our heritage and families, deeply shaping the way we maneuver through our lives. Through honoring those values, I wanted to evolve my heritage by channeling traditional aromas into modern, luxury candle scents. Breaking generational curses while establishing your personal identity is no small feat. While on your path to self-discovery, honor that fact that we are all trying, and at no point should you deny yourself the luxuries that should come after working so hard! Every candle is hand-poured with conscious concern using coconut-soy wax and wooden wicks. I really wanted people to be able to invite the luxe of the West Indies into their homes without having to leave. I am most proud of our all-natural approach to the candle burning experience and I am excited to expand into the wellness category in years to come.
