Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonia Yim.
Sonia, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m a designer, hand-letterer, illustrator and YouTuber based in Northern California 🙂
To quickly talk about my journey, I used to be a full-time mom working in an accounting industry. I actually never went to art school or got any design-related training. My art journey began when I quit my full-time job and became a stay-at-home-mom. I had a lot of free time on my hand and as I was taking care of my daughter (who was two at the time), I started learning Adobe Illustrator and practiced making logos. After that, I started an Instagram account to upload my progress and later participated in HOMwork (a lettering prompt challenge by Lauren Hom) and immediately fell in love with lettering!
Ever since I never stopped creating and I now run a small studio called Soniaydesigns and created a YouTube channel (Soniaydesigns) to teach other people who want to be self-taught designers 🙂
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I specialize in telling memorable brand stories through lettering and illustrations. Especially, I enjoy creating art that is quirky, witty, and vibrant in colors — the kind of art that spreads positivity and makes people smile 🙂
I really believe that artwork can have a huge impact in people’s life and as an artist, one of my goals is to create a piece that can have a positive impact in their life — something that can boost their mood.
I also have a passion project called Universe Buddy (Instagram account @universe_buddy) that is dear to my heart. I wanted to share life struggles and love in a unique way, which is through this cute blobby character, the Universe 🙂
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Although there are many ways success can be defined, me personally as an artist, the biggest success is when my art reaches people’s heart. If I can truly touch people’s hearts with my work in a positive way, even it’s one person, I feel that I succeeded as an artist.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
