Check Out Yosmar Vela’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yosmar Vela.

Hi Yosmar, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Began with a GoPro filming in high school, filmed clips during my senior year in high school, and compiled all of them together creating a reel. Shortly after, bought a camera canon 70D and began taking my camera everywhere I went, began knowing the fundamentals and specs of a DSLR, and followed by the rules of photograph and videography. I began learning how to edit videos in Adobe Suite, using premiere pro and after-effects. I read a couple of books that helped with increasing my knowledge in the videography industry. When I began college, I landed my first gig, it was to film for Boy Scouts of America, different testimonials, and ever since then I have been doing freelance as a side hustle, escalating to learning Marketing for businesses and how to incorporate social media and content creation for them. I bought a mirrorless camera and learned different functions with it. Began shooting for big brands such as Coors Light, Budweiser, Corona Premier, PGA Golf, and Bumble.

As my love for photography and videography, I condensed my specialization to photography and developed a love for travel. I love shooting landscapes and documenting places the majority of people cannot go to. My parents came from Mexico into the U.S and they have never had the opportunity to travel, so therefore I love sharing my pictures with them. I have visited almost every U.S national park and continue to aspire to travel with friends capturing beautiful content. My end goal and dream is to eventually partner with National Geographic to document the changes of our planet and how to advocate for environmental change using the power of photography and social media. Nonetheless, to remind people how small we are in this planet and how everything we do affects the world we live in.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I have invested over $10,000 on sole equipment, had multiple jobs on top of my content gigs, and also trying to graduate college was a huge challenge. Had lots of expenses I had to pay for that until this day I am still trying to pay off.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do photography, videography, and freelance work such as weddings, graduation pictures, fitness portraits, and more. Something that I am super proud of is how authentic I am, in this climate in competition, most creators look for shortcuts, but I am building it by myself, and it’s been rewarding. Something that sets me apart from others is capturing moments in which people think it’s impossible.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes, almost everything has been digitized and moved into the technology world, people forgot how to socialize or what it feels like to be outdoors therefore I try to put lots of content out there that shows the world that there is still happiness.
