Check Out Toribel Mora’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toribel Mora.

Hi Toribel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Being in the hair/beauty industry has always been something I’ve had an interest in since I was in middle school. Of course, it started when I discovered box dye, I used to love changing my hair color even if it was a simple light brown or black, I then started cutting my own bangs & braiding friend’s hair in P.E class. Moving onto junior year of high school is when I started getting more information on cosmetology school & realizing it was something I could do after high school but coming from a Hispanic family they wanted me to focus on a nursing career. I gave nursing a try & dropped out twice which finally led me to beauty school, I attended Paul Mitchell in Sherman Oaks & after graduating, I got an assistant position in a salon called Bigoudi located in Woodland Hills. That salon is where I truly felt I learned what it was to be a hairstylist, my mentors & coworkers all have a part in the stylist I am today & I couldn’t thank them enough. My friend/mentor Anayeli is truly the one who gave me a chance to apply what I learned as an assistant into my own clients, we moved into our own studio in 2019 & I definitely struggled my first year to the point where I had to get a second job but nothing ever comes easy & I did have an amazing support system that never let me give up. I’m blessed to say that 2021 was the year I ended up being fully booked months in advance & I’m very thankful for my regular clients/ new clients I get to see in my chair. It’s been a rocky journey but one I’m very proud of & I can’t wait to continue my journey for many years to come.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There definitely was some struggles, I began assisting in May of 2018 at Bigoudi & in June of 2019 sadly, the salon closed shop. Since I was still an assistant when the salon closed, I wasn’t able to build my own clientele which was a struggle to build when me & Anayeli made the move into our studio at Regency Salon Studios. Little by little, I was starting to take clients when sadly covid hit & like many other businesses made us close our doors. Being out of work for so long did give me that push to work extra hard when doors opened again & that’s exactly what happened for me in 2021, I definitely look back at my struggles as big motivators now to keep moving forward.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a full-time hairstylist & I specialize in color, corrections, balayage/highlights & haircutting. Also, on my free time making reels on Instagram for fun which you can see @thetorytouch. I’m most proud of my client feedback & them actually wanting to take care of their hair after a service with me. I love educating my clients about their hair & the results of their service in case I know for a fact they will not be leaving with what they wanted to leave with, I’m all about being honest with my clients & I truly believe it’s something they appreciate & them rebooking shows me that they trust my hair advice.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about my city is the many food places around me, and the least is the fact that parking is very hard to find!
