Check Out Meelz’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meelz.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As corny as it may sound, I truly feel like my entire life has been a creative journey leading to where I am today. I’ve been creative for as long as I can remember and I’ve never stopped feeling like artistry is something I am meant to do. Since childhood, I’ve been exploring many forms of expression in the realms of writing, music, film, and live performance. I feel innately connected to music and it has always come naturally. It was about four years ago when I decided to make my own. I dusted off my childhood saxophone and piano skills, learned how to produce/mix, and dove in. 1 year ago was my debut EP release “Pick Up Stix,” and I’ve been continuing to create more new music since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest struggles for me have been related to mental health. I have experienced trauma and challenges that were life-changing, and remaining true to my personal healing process has slowed me down at times. I don’t regret moving more slowly than the capitalist social media machine wants me to move, and I believe that we all owe it to ourselves to prioritize our well-being. At the same time, it has been a challenge feeling an artistic urge to create and share while moving through an overwhelming healing journey that naturally pulls me away from productivity or engagement. I know everything happens on time and I still feel immense gratitude to be doing what I do.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and performer. I am most proud of the decision I made to learn music production. A few years back, I was attempting to partner with producers and not finding the connection I needed. It finally pushed me to just “do it myself,” and that leap was a game-changer. Building my songs from scratch has taught me so much about myself- I love being on the constant learning journey with the craft, and everything I work on feels like a true expression of me. Now, even as I collaborate, I have this beautiful foundation that is rooted in my own discipline and self-expression. I can’t put my finger on what sets me apart from others, and I’m sure everyone would see that in their own way, but I do know that my music tends to genre-blend in a way that feels unique to me. I am passionate and deep while also being lighthearted and playful, and I don’t see why music can’t also be all of those things at once. Above all, I am committed to authenticity. If it doesn’t come from the heart and soul, it’s not it.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think the most immediate change in the industry will come from live events starting up again. Music fans have been craving live concerts and festivals, and the thrill of that communal experience will be explosive for the music industry. For me personally, I’m making lots of exciting life changes both in and out of the music realm. A lot will change over the next 5-10 years but one certainty is that I will keep recording and releasing music, and I look forward to live performance as well. My next album is currently in the works and I’m giddy about sharing new stuff.
