Today we’d like to introduce you to Clara & Marie Becker.
Hi Clara & Marie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Classical Music has always been in our environment and at home. Being a professional musician our father introduced us to the violin and we have always been interested in the piano since our mother owned a grand piano. When we discovered playing together as a piano duo, the wish to continue on this path and to work hard in order to become a professional duo was there from very early in our adolescence.
From then on we uniquely focused on this career and never separated to do our studies individually. On our way, we have been supported and guided by internationally renowned musicians and piano duos who encourage us to live this life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We are sure that most young artists face similar obstacles on their way. It has surely never been easy for a musician to build a reputation in the music scene and to fight the struggles along the road.
Nowadays, the challenges are multifaceted- besides having to prepare concerts and work many hours on the instrument, there are many more tasks such as promoting yourself and being your own manager, be present on social media, acquire concerts and being your own tour planner. In order to bring projects to life a lot of time also goes into applications for grants and stipends.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Being twins, it has always been natural to share not only many things in life but also our profession: the piano.
We were enthusiastic from the very first minute we started playing a four-hand piece together at the age of 14. Since then our dream to become a professional piano duo was clear and we dedicated ourselves fully to our career. Unlike most other piano duos, we uniquely perform together and never separated to follow individual projects.
In the last years, we have been performing at festivals and venues in several countries in Europe and around the world. Every trip is special and enriching to us- we learn from every experience and collect wonderful memories. Our dream is to collaborate with artists from different genres and to encourage composers to write for piano duos to make our repertoire grow. It has been very unique to work together with composers and to bring projects to life that cross the boundaries of classical music.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Making Ravioli and Pasta from scratch with our dad, who is a great cook! The pasta sheet we made was longer than what we could hold in our four hands together!
