Today we’d like to introduce you to Aeron Premo.
Hi Aeron, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I DJ, record, and perform music under the stage name Rose Corps. While I consider Fairfax, Virginia to be my hometown, I was born in Fort Moore (Columbus), Georgia, and raised all over the Southeastern United States and Germany as the daughter of a career military officer and was fortunate to be exposed to an incredibly wide range of musical genres. I came to music a bit later than most – while I did participate in the occasional choir and learned to play some instruments, my first love was dance, and I grew up training as a competitive dancer. I decided during college that I eventually wanted to make music my full-time profession, but it took quite a bit of time to begin my career as I took a detour into corporate America. After taking a trip to Australia (my late paternal grandmother’s home country) in 2013 and meeting musically inclined family members, I accepted that music was my calling. I officially started Rose Corps in 2016 but started to come full circle two years later when I launched the DJ portion of my career. I released my first single “Fantasies” in October 2019 and have been juggling between both DJing and original music ever since!
At the moment, I am currently in the process of planning and writing my debut EP, titled Green Light, and look forward to expanding my musical offerings, ranging from guest vocals to cowriting to hosting radio.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been bumpy, but it’s one that I think I was meant to travel. For a long time, I was very insecure about starting later than others, and that mental block prevented me from really getting established when I should have. But I feel that I have been able to make up for it, and I now realize that ageism is an issue that I can highlight, as opposed to being held back by it.
I also think that in the digital age, there is so much music out in the world, and being able to make yourself heard is an incredible challenge. You really have to be not just an artist but a marketing expert. The music business is absolutely a business, and you have to keep your head in the game.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I write and perform original music as well as DJ. I combine a variety of genres, but the core ones that appear as influences are disco, house, R&B/soul, and synthpop. As a recording artist, I strive to showcase strong, soulful, and confident vocals, groovy beats combined with creative melodies, atmospheric production, and lyrics that highlight challenges but have a silver lining to them. As a DJ, disco, house, and funky sounds from the 70s and beyond tend to permeate my sets.
In May 2021, I founded Break Every Rule, which is an initiative that seeks to promote and lift up female and non-binary recording artists and DJs aged 30 and over. While it started as an Instagram account highlighting the stories of artists in multiple genres who were able to achieve success at 30 or older, it has since expanded into a blog. I am also planning to launch a podcast and am looking to see where else this initiative will take me. I am on the same journey as many of Break Every Rule’s followers, trying to launch a career at an age where most have already succeeded or have given up, and I think I can be a voice to help expand the conversation about how toxic ageism in music is.
I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been able to discover a wide range of music due to my transient childhood and through having family members that live on multiple continents. Because of that, I love discovering music from all over the world and learning about what is popular in different countries. It allows me to share music with others that one might not hear otherwise.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My determination is what I would consider my strongest suit. As an ENFP in the Myers-Briggs universe, I thrive on challenge and am hellbent on seeing my artistic visions through.
While I can be single-minded in regard to my artistic vision, I thrive on working with others and love being a part of a community. This is not an industry where you can completely go at it alone. Having people around you that you trust, as well as being that person yourself, is an immensely important part of whether a project will be successful or not.
