Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackrabbit Jade.
Jackrabbit Jade, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Jackrabbit Jade kind of formed by accident… We were jamming with some friends when we met and realized we wanted to do something more eclectic with this songwriting style that we both loved.
“I didn’t play guitar at the time and would just sing the songs I was writing to Julian, completely a cappella and he just pulled the guitar parts right out of my head. It was magical. Then Julian would show me these insane songs he was writing and we saw that we had something rather unique. That’s when we started writing together as well and decided to form our band” – Sarah
After going through so many different members, we resorted to playing acoustic shows since we didn’t have a bassist or a drummer. Now we are a solid full band: Giovanni D’Ambrosio on drums, Thomas Richetts on bass, Julian Ward on guitar and vocals, and Sarah Di Maria Poole as lead vocalist.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
We call ourselves “desert rock” which in a way has to do with our storytelling lyrics, but also with the actual music. We like to tell stories and implement folklore in our songs, but things that relate to the human experience.
“Something that interested me, growing up in Arizona, I loved playing out in the desert. I would see all types of animals like coyotes, snakes, Gila monsters, owls, and of course jackrabbits. I’ve always been interested in the contrast of desert life. The jackrabbit is a survivor, constantly dealing with numerous predators, so they learn to adapt and strive in their environment. We hope that people can get lost in these stories with us, whether fact or fiction. Reality or illusion. Truth or deception. Fear or love. There are metaphors in all these themes and we like to invoke those emotions through our music.” -Sarah
“If there’s anything we aim to achieve it is bearing our concept with significance. As Jackrabbit Jade we are a collection of musical influences and personal ideologies that we seek to resonate to listeners on a spiritual level.” -Julian
“We are storytellers, we deliver a soundtrack to it. Our goal is to immerse people into our world for the length of our set list and give them an example of what a “deserty” tale could be.” -Giovanni
“I hope people take away that the fundamental styles of music are not dead, and that overproduction does not beat beautiful harmonies and progressions” -Thomas
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
“I believe the biggest challenge facing artists today is the lack of popular venues supporting live musicians. Today’s generation focuses on social media marketing and many live venues lack in marketing on that platform.” -Thomas
“I think the most arduous part of being an artist today is the fast-paced business of web-presence. It takes more than just playing around and making music, there’s now a constant need to post things online. Today, especially for an independent act, being a creative talent is only half of the process. You are in a sense you’re own PR. You have to know how to successfully navigate through a multitude of social media sites.” -Julian
“The internet is a great tool for artists but has also caused a lot of changes. Our society’s attention span has shortened and there is definitely a lack of depth in mainstream music these days, we aim to help bring back the appreciation for music.” -Sarah
“The biggest challenge is facing what is actually music today, a corrupted system. Money is what resonates more instead of the music itself in the process of getting known to people which can be pretty frustrating for a band trying to promote themselves.” -Giovanni
