Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Stam.
Bianca, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a half Italian half Chinese girl, born in Chicago IL and raised in Hong Kong from a set of divorced parents and raised by my single mother. I actually grew up speaking five languages, because both sides of my family were not proficient in English whatsoever. It was an interesting upbringing, under lots of pressure because money was always an issue, but we made do with what we had. I looked up to my mother’s determination to be successful and implemented many of her business acumens into my own life, even though I was always an artist.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am an actress, primarily. I star in a show called OCTB which is on Netflix, a Chinese TV drama (where I speak Cantonese), as well as the movie Chasing the Dragon (also available on Netflix.) That being said, I did start out modeling in Asia. I held tons of different jobs in my life in the past; I worked at Subway sandwiches, was a kindergarten teacher, and currently own an Italian restaurant in Andersonville in Chicago called Bar Roma Chicago.
How can artists connect with other artists?
It is indeed a long and lonely road, and indeed one of the most judgmental industries of all time. (From insiders looking in and outsiders looking in too.) Everyone has their own two cents on ‘how’ a person made it, and tend to discredit each other often due to jealousy and lack of opportunity. Connecting with other artists who are likeminded is such a gift to your soul and sanity. My advice is that it isn’t easy to find these people, but when you do (get lucky enough to stumble across them via work/happenstance) hold on to them dearly.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Netflix is universally accepted, which is why I find it such a powerful tool. I get fan mail weekly on Instagram from people who I do not expect to invest their time in Chinese TV dramas, French, African, Spanish, American, British people- you name it! This is the best platform to watch my work.
