Today we’d like to introduce you to Sormani.
Sormani, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
The best way to describe myself would be through music, I’ve been surrounded by music my whole life, my father is from Italy and my mother from Peru, both cultures are tremendously rooted in music, I grew up surrounded by the diverse sounds of the Peruvian culture and at the same time my father would make me listen to Italian singers such as Pavarotti or Bocelli. You could already imagine the mix of sounds I was surrounded by haha!
At the age of 12 I moved to Los Angeles with my mom and my father went back to Italy, once in high school my choir teacher Joy Devlin who is like a mother to me, saw in me potential to begin singing so she would make me perform at all the events that the school would have and once I graduated from high school Jhonny Saavedra, the senior pastor of Christ For The Nations asked me to begin leading worship, I learned so much from P. Saavedra, he’s a paternal figure to me, then on 2015 I was hired as the main singer for The Revival City Movement, I must say that I left big part of my heart in Revival City, I will always carry them in my heart, you could tell I’m such an emotional guy.
On 2016 I met the incredible Maxwell David, President of Spears Music, a company which focuses on developing young artists, I’ve learned so much from Maxwell, there is gratitude for him in my heart, I remember that until that time I wasn’t sure if really wanted to pursue a career in music then one afternoon I was coming out of a meeting with Maxwell in Santa Monica and I saw a young performer playing his guitar and singing his heart out & in that moment I was convinced that music was my calling, well it turned out that the young performer was Nico Franc, an amazing musician who has sold out the iconic Hotel Cafe & now one of my best friends, I thank heaven for Nico, because of him I met some of my best friends in the industry, he has been a solid one in my life.
On 2018 I decided to create Revival Arts, which was a project that focused on uniting singers, musicians, actors, dancers & media techs to develop them into their callings, I’m very proud of that project, it gave me the opportunity to work with so many talented people that only needed a chance to demonstrate how much potential they had. If we only stop for a second to see the beauty on each person our world would be different.
By the end of 2018 my vocal cords began to fail me, so my doctor advised me to take some time to rest, so I took advantage of it and after a decade of intense and hard work I took some time of much-needed rest and now I’ve decided to fully focus on my career & go back into songwriting, performing and currently working on my debut single by the hand of the talented & incredible Ani Kresse.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a singer, songwriter and I’ve also done some acting but honestly 90% of the songs I’ve written or performed are about breakups or even sad songs based not only on my own experiences but also based on others, trust me I still believe there is joy in the midst of singing melodies that make you cry.
My biggest message for every single person that listens to a song that has been written or performed by me is that they could relate to that song, that they could find healing through that melody and say: Hey I also went through that, I’m not the only one, that’s why I’m so demanding and such a perfectionist with everything I do and I can’t wait to begin releasing all the songs I’ve been writing for so long.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
My best advice is to stay true to ourselves, don’t become someone you are not, let your art speak for yourself, let your talent describe who you are and sooner or later people will value all of your hard work. When I was a worship director I never allowed people to interfere with my job or the art I was developing, I began when I was a teenager and I had to stand for myself and deal with pastors or influential leaders in the church community so I matured really young, don’t take me wrong I take criticism but only from my closest people. In my opinion it’s sad to see that nowadays many young and talented artists become slaves of social media because they want to stay relevant and they do whatever it’s in their hands to not lose followers or likes, don’t get me wrong, I love social media but never let it control you, you are the artist, you should be in control of your career.
I don’t regret anything honestly, every single step I have given through this journey has given me the experience to become better each day, I have learned to take each circumstance as an opportunity to bring the best of it. I don’t hold grudges, two people that I really loved and admired sat down one night with me and began to destroy me with lots of hurtful words and at the end one of them told me “all artists stink” (with a very angry face) I stood up from that meeting and run to my car sobbing and lost and about to commit something crazy with my life, it took me months to come out of from depression and until this day I’m still healing from that situation, this journey hasn’t been easy and if something I have learned from following Jesus is to learn to forgive when people hurt you, promote love when others promote hate, see the best in people instead of focusing on their flaws, I strongly believe that our world needs people that promote love and unity instead of hate and division.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
All my social media is focused mainly on my music, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and now my website, which I been waiting for so long to release, all of it is under Sormani Music, which is my artist name, so I’m Sormani, nice to meet you! Haha!
The best way for people to support my career is by connecting with me, I don’t want to become the artist that’s far away from his fans and only comes out when he has new music, I want to be able to support other artists out there and together help each other reach our goals and be there for each other, Los Angeles is such a big city, and I’m sure there is room for everyone to show their talents.
